Quasi’s head spun as his fur bristled and burned on end, he staggered backward from the shame and just wanted desperately for the cave floor to open up and swallow him whole. Maybe that would be enough to repent…
“Quasi, it’s fine. You caught a squirrel! I know prey is scarce right now with all that’s going on, but be proud of yourself for managing to catch something.”
She assured in an understanding and saintly way, but that only made Quasi feel even worse; embarrassed? Flattered? Ashamed? He couldn’t think straight enough to know. All he could really manage was the shaky thanks in response to her kindness as she had heavenly flowers circle around her head like a Halo.

But he froze when he saw her struggle to stand from her bed, and as he watched, he saw the one thing that made all of his reality come crashing back down onto his heart and shoulders. It wasn’t the prominent ribs he could see through her haggard brown and white fur that put him in pause; if anything, it was the way her stomach was still bulbous and undoubtedly holding the life that was formed between her… and his older brother…
Quasi looked shamefully away again, his eyes darkening and his pointed ears pulling back almost against his head. He was terrible. Absolutely terrible. How could he go on and expect there to be anything between him and the one wolf who showed nothing but kindness to him… no, it wasn’t just her. It was his older brother too… the one who fought ruthlessly and against lethal odds to keep him alive and still within the pack that never really wanted him in the first place… Even when their father cursed his existence, his brother never faltered. He was never going to be so noble and loyal as his brother ever was… He was truly terrible…
