Description
"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom — go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen!"Samuel Adams, August 1, 1776

Anyway, I really hope this never happens.
Following the near-bloodless separation of states, the USSA (Union of Socialist States of America) disbands most of its military units, and sells many of its vessels abroad, hoping that the savings can be applied to all the social programs promised to its citizens. Corruption and mismanagement of funds cancel out any possible savings from dismantling defense.
With most manufacturing relocated overseas and with insufficient agricultural and other resources, the grand social programs never materialize. Lawlessness follows, mostly in urban centers.
Though the USSA continues to claim control over its bi-coastal territory, and even hints at an invitation for Canada to merge with it and form a Union of North American Republics (hence the design of its flag), it is unable to even maintain law and order in the Pacific coast for long and so requests UN Peacekeepers. China provides the bulk of those troops, and takes on the role of re-establishing peace and order along with the organized distribution of foreign humanitarian aid. However, after a couple of months, the Peackeepers close most of the free distribution center, establish martial law and then proceed to establish control outside of the UN mandate of coastal urban sites. Assimilation of the interior territory in each of the Pacific states follows.

With the goal of destabilizing the US and to obtain access to more agricultural lands along the Atlantic coast, the USSA initiates a series of organized insurrections along coastal areas of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. The USSA promises local militant supporters the misguided hope of becoming an autonomous extension of the USSA. The spread of predatory raids is halted at the foot of the Appalachians, and eventually all the insurrections are suppressed.
Disbanded troops and disenfranchised veterans in the USSA migrate with families to the core states, which for now continue to call themselves the US. Once there, many proceed to join the US military. Alaska supports the core territories.
Though Canada maintains that it is completely neutral regarding the US balkanization process, eventually it establishes closer ties with the remnant USA in order to dissuade China from establishing control over any of Canada's sovereign territory. This allows the USA to maintain direct overland access to Alaska and its resources, primarily its oil.
This is what I used to make this map:

Nowhere near as nice as the maps you all come up with. Maybe I'll get there some day.

The good news is that my state is in the USA (Alabama). Bad news is that most of my family - both on my mom and dad's sides - would be in the USSA (Maryland and Pennsylvania).

Perhaps, in this reality, Commissar Sanders doesn’t live past the first couple of years and his successor is unable to keep all of those “border states” under his/her control, even with help from the UN.

Cool. The closest one to my dwelling location is within the city about two miles away.

Well, I hope you have a car to get there.
Mine is at the mechanic, so I had to walk there.
Sadly, it turns out they moved the polling place another 15 minutes away and the 'memory foam' in my shoes have already worn out.

Don't worry. This is all fiction. Alternate history. The ravings of a maniac (me).
I hope.

I do hope so but the current evolution of the Democratic Party scares me in a way.

Might be fiction, but fiction has a scary way of becoming all too real sometimes.
