My most recent illustration from my Firebloods project! Firebloods is a fantasy story involving rising conflict between humans and dragons, set in a roughly Renaissance-level tech era. Said human culture is in the midst of putting gunpowder to military use, though the only means they currently know by which to obtain it is from the remains of dragons. They do this in ignorance of just how sentient dragons are- and might be surprised to know how closely some dragons are watching their actions.
Adecia, the country where most of the story takes place, has a largely Mesoamerican-inspired culture basis, and the environment in Adecia (where much of the story takes place) is based on the local landscape I've grown up around in Central Texas.
While Adecian culture is largely egalitarian in terms of gender (including having some third-gender roles), their traditional understanding of the natural world leads them to see some jobs or trades as more easily suited for men or women, though going against the precedent is not considered shameful. One of these is butchery, which women are thought to generally have a more natural skill for, as it is a profession 'of the body' and the handling thereof-- along with such jobs as tanner, surgeon, doctor, animal handler, and precision-based military roles.
