Description Something a bit different for me...but still in the realm of Fantasy. This is also more personal. A self portrait. Sure I love fantasy and scifi...but I also love ancient history. In particular, Roman history. I have family roots in northern Italy and have always been fascinated by the depth and breadth of the Roman influence on civilization. So this is...my 2000-year-old Self!

Thank you, Mina! I was refreshing to indulge my love of ancient Rome and show another side of myself besides the usual scifi/fantasy.

Understand the historical context of this piece - but the reality; it is a fabulous piece of work - a fine "portrait" if you will...

Very true - I very much enjoy the books of Bernard Cornwell, C. J. Samsom and Simon Scarrow, but cannot say I would really like to have lived in such times - where a brutal birth, life and death was certainly the norm....

Ha! Yes indeed. There is a huge difference between WONDERING...and actuallyΒ LIVING it. Romance and reality seldom match up!

Nicely done. It's interesting to see how you've changed (or, at least, how you've seen yourself change) since Heroes & Rogues.

Thanks, Jonathan! I needed an ID pic to accompany my bio in an artbook for the Westward RPG (Wicked North Games). I just couldn't do the standard photo ID thing. Too borrring. So I figured I might as well kill as many birds with that stone as I possibly could. Thus...a painted selfportrait...fantasy...and an expression of my fondness for Roman history.

It's a good thing I like Russell Crowe (even though I had problems with 'Gladiator'). Considering I did this from a photograph...I will take it as a compliment!

I don't really speak, read, or write Roman. Well, let's see if I can work it out. After all English came from Latin.
Um, Very, four in the face mean. I temporary oil.
I figure that is a slogan for some kind of Roman acne medicine. Well I must say, you have depicted yourself with an excellent completion.
I'm sorry Mr. Vilardi. I mean no disrespect. I don't know what got into me just then.

Hey, this is cool.... and you don't look a day over 1991! So if you were in Italy, you're hair would turn red??
So what part of N.Italy is your family from?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

caesar120 In reply to RobCaswell [2013-09-10 19:30:04 +0000 UTC]

Actually, I was born with red hair...which (according to Mom) fell out after an allergic reaction to, of all things, orange juice. Grew back blonde. Now at my advanced age, my hair has become a dusty-blonde. In the original watercolor the hair is far less red than it appears in the scan. I believe my Father's family line is from the Lombardy region.
