Description Kabul, Afghanistan
October 2003:

This is a resubmission. A gathering of women buying lace and trim from the local merchant in the bazaar. I made many images of the burqa-clad women of Kabul...fascinating! I never tired of the apparition-esque quality of these ancient garments and the mysterious beings who dwelt inside of them...

While the tone of this image does not reveal so, most of the burqas are blue. When the Taliban were in control until October 2001, they issued an edict that blue would be the only color permitted to be worn by the women as it did not evoke sexual impulses. Once in a while you can see a white or brown one in Kabul, however, that is still very rare.

Men's slaves, and slaves from a phallic idea of the "god".

Paganism, Wicca,Β withΒ their ideas of Female Goddessess, is the way for the liberating of the Women, from the chains of the patriarcal religion

(islam, christianity, and the hebrew religion)

This, means rape, violence, death. That's all.

the problem wasnt the burqa the problem was that they were being forced to wear them but the burqas were the least of the problems for the women at that time, the taliban was a group of sick people who had serious issues.

Muslim women are not forced to wear burqa, i am from pakistan and i never forced my sister to wear a veil. They do so because God tells them to. If you need an answer dont ask from the news channels or media, ask a muslim women, what if we say the western world force women to wear mini skirts and shots, no that is your choice and this is ours. No question of forcing someone.

The very answer is that you have a phallical and patriarcal conception of "god". Islam, Christianity, Hebrew religion, you are all based upon the submission of the Women, and a phallic idea about "god" (see as a male, master and so on, not with female names)

Β

The Paganism, the Wicca, liberates Women from these chains. They have Female Goddesses not only male gods.

i do admit black sheeps are every where and in every religion. . . Our main source of guidance is Quran and the actions of prophet Muhammad, Prophet Muhammad says be kind to your wife children and parents as i am kind to my wife children and parents. . . And those cruelties that are carried out by some muslims unfortunately are deviating from Islam and its teachings, , And these things not only happen in Afghanistan but even in the developed countries, are you 100% sure that their is no women discrimination, sexual harassment in america and European countries, ofcourse there are and these things sadly happens everywhere and by every religion, dont you know about women married to Dog, Trees, and monkeys in India by Hindus yes it happened and they arent muslims they are hindos, so one cant point fingers at muslims without the background studies,
If you are so much concerned about women rights in Islam, then i would suggest read "Chapter Surah Nissa" of the holy quran, and that will tell you that Islam is the only religion which gives more rights to women then ever.
"And give to the women (whom you marry) their Mahr (obligatory bridal money given by the husband to his wife at the time of marriage) with a good heart, but if they, of their own good pleasure, remit any part of it to you, take it, and enjoy it without fear of any harm (as Allah has made it lawful) Surah Nissa,".

Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allah has made one of them to excel the other, and because they spend (to support them) from their means. Therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedient (to Allah and to their husbands), and guard in the husband's absence what Allah orders them to guard (e.g. their chastity, their husband's property, etc.)

You will never be able to do perfect justice between wives even if it is your ardent desire, so do not incline too much to one of them (by giving her more of your time and provision) so as to leave the other hanging (i.e. neither divorced nor married). And if you do justice, and do all that is right and fear Allah by keeping away from all that is wrong, then Allah is Ever Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

I forgot to answer about that part where you said women in India are married to dogs, trees and monkeys. What is your problem ? Atleast those husbands wom't rape them and put them behind bars. Unless a tree can do that o.0

You seem to be from another planet...when was the last time you typed woman in afghanistan on youtube ? Let me help you... [link] [link] these are only 2 videos. I saw them yesterday night and had a bad time sleeping. Also keep in mind what the religious dude says in the second video.

Now for what you said about America ( I willalso give you examples of my town since it is full of the garbage of Muslim society ). We westerns do not force the women here to dress up in mini skirts and they are not accepted in every day life. If they wear them it is for parties or occasions like that and even then they are mistaken for whores and drug addicts. Now, about religion. my city is full of the garbage of muslim society. People constantly leave muslim countries in search for a better life. Athens is jam packed with immigrants almost always from a muslim country. In a period of about 30 years Athens has turned into a hell hole. women are constantly raped by them and men are constantly murdered. We are afraid to live in our own city ( yes...we are at the virge of putting them all in containers and shipping them back to their countries ) You also say about women rights in Islam...just google " most dangerous counties to be born a woman " and then see which countries are muslim. ( for some reason I can't seem to find any western countries...hmmmmmmmm )

your right...and what you have to understand is that we ( non-muslims ) don't say that Muslims as a whole do that to women...we just do it cause those that do use religion to justify their acts. Good luck with to you and your family and have a good life.

i am a muslim you idiot, i said the TALIBAN FORCED THEM, wether somebody wants to wear shorts or a scarf is not the problem the problem is forcing people to do so and in many countries women are forced to dress a particular way and that is wrong

i like the ghostly effect this image has
and very strong too, although not necessary in a racial/oppressed way
some people find burqas a form of oppression, particularly when it comes to western conceptions of the middle east. however, is it still considered an oppression if the women themselves want to the wear these burqas?

the Taliban had the idea that blue did not sexually stimulate the man and other colors would. The Wahabi sect of Islam is very concerned with keeping the woman in check so that she does not titillate the man...

It is a similar logic as not being allowed to fly kite, because that was seen as sinful according to the Taliban...and yet they would rationalize it as being a saftey measure to protect the kids from falling off of roofs and to restrain them from gambling. You see, often, in Pakistan and Afganistan, kite racing and "fighting" is a competitive sport which bets are placed on. Gambling was a no-no to the Taliban. Hope this at least gives some idea as to the often arcane regulations placed on the people of Afghanistan by the ultraist religious regime. It doesn't always have to make sense to have a totalitarian government...look at the US and the myriad archaic laws still on the books and yet our dwindling constitutional rights.

I am sure the color blue represents serenity and calm...the way a patriarchal supremacy would best have "their" women....

Thanks for the extra imput. It does change the way you look at things, even color. (I always think of blue as a sort of subtle 'look at me' color.) And I certainly didn't know about the kites.
