Peshawar, PakistanOctober 2003:
An adorable sister and brother who followed me for a couple of blocks whilst exploring the old town of Peshawar. One wonders where the parents are of these tiny kids who seemingly come from nowhere and vanish as mysteriously. In the West, we are so riddled with fear to leave our children for but a moment save they be whisked away by an axe-wielding maniac...
Kids grow up fast in the East...especially in war zones. My heart is full to have experienced a moment of joy with them while they are still so full of joy and innocence.

it's wonderful to see children there with such childlike looks in their eyes - it's not something one gets to see frequently on the nightly news and such. You capture the most wonderful things!

They look like many less fortunate Egyptian children found on the streets. Their innocence is very well captured. I never have any constructive criticism. Your photos are definitely different.

Yeah--I think the parents in these places of real uncertainty let their children roam because they know something, like maybe each day is totally uncertain. We in the west, on the other hand, try to keep a tight grip on Everything and act like we can control and be certain of it all. Just an over-simplified guess, but looking in these joyful, trusting faces Sting's song comes to mind: "if you love someone, set them free...". Thanx for sharing this.
