Description Yes! more startrails! This is a surf-livesaver watch tower at a local beach. Pretty good idea since a few tourists have drowned here...

Around 40 min exposure, tower lit with LED torch

Super surreal, Lighthouse beach right? The light painting and the pale sky has really given this a terrific feel and the colours are complimentary as am I

This is sheer brilliance, the clear, sharpness of it all is outstanding. Love the idea of using the flash light to light the tower, very well shot mate.

Cain, your work simply gets better and better with each shot. This is absolutely stunning! Your composition is perfect and so is your techniques for lighting the object in the foreground! Very well done my friend!

"I love doing this stuff"....It shows Cain and it is all definitely worthwhile. Have you ever sold any of your work?

CainPascoe In reply to SeptSky [2009-09-06 10:31:10 +0000 UTC]

Have sold a few images.. not many at all, maybe enough to pay for one of my lenses if i was to start selling i'd like to get set up properly with my own website/business type of thing rather than through another site like redbubble or dA but first i need an income!

I've seen this before and wanted to try it, was it pitch dark when you did this?

CainPascoe In reply to KatherineDavis [2009-09-05 14:42:55 +0000 UTC]

Was almost a full moon(2 days from one) so was quite light

Sun-Seeker In reply to KatherineDavis [2009-09-06 10:40:49 +0000 UTC]

Full moon will give the light sky Cain has got, half moon will give you a darker effect.

It's beautiful !!

But you have to tell me how you got the focus on the tower and on the stars ..

I tried without much success

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CainPascoe In reply to Me-Myself-And [2009-09-05 14:35:28 +0000 UTC]

Thankyou! Focus is easier when you can see but i usually don't bother with it and leave it set to infinity, leaving it on manual

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Me-Myself-And In reply to CainPascoe [2009-09-05 15:04:17 +0000 UTC]

It doesn't work for me
([link] if you have 2 minutes) The trees are blurry ..

Or it might be the wide aperture ..

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CainPascoe In reply to Me-Myself-And [2009-09-05 15:12:26 +0000 UTC]

i think your focus is ok.. its more to do with the camera not being still enough. Looks like its been moved - tiny, like wind or shakey finger on shutter button? the lines in the sky should be smooth and yours have little jaggies... Tripod and shutter release/remote and make sure nothing comes near it

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Me-Myself-And In reply to CainPascoe [2009-09-05 15:19:29 +0000 UTC]

Yes, thanks
I didn't have a remote to keep the tripod from moving

So badass!
I'm curious though, at what point in the exposure do you light the tower?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CainPascoe In reply to Indigo76 [2009-09-05 14:30:09 +0000 UTC]

Haha cheers! Well this is another blend of about 80 shots i usually light paint towards the end or start of it all.. its great too as you can light from different angles over different shots and it will blend quite nicely leaving no real shadows

Indigo76 In reply to CainPascoe [2009-09-06 07:33:05 +0000 UTC]

That is awesome man!
Thank you so much Cain, I have a lot to learn in this area still and
it's great to have someone who doesn't mind sharing some info on it
I figured it might have been near the end, but I wasn't sure if it would make
a difference or not

"Thanks again!"

I am sure it was a bright night, awsome picture.

Just curios, i read that for 40 minutes it could damage the sensor, is that right??

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CainPascoe In reply to ha1k4l [2009-09-05 14:27:15 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

apparently it can.. thats why i've been taking lots of 30sec shots and blending them it helps for noise and the likes too!
