AAAA LOOK I DID IT 8DD
pls ignore any spelling mistakes eue

drawing done in sai
editing done in gimp
full body took about 3-4 hours to shade, bust took about 2 hours

i really never know if what i say in these tutorials is helpful or not, so if you have any questions i'm more than happy to answer them ; u ; <3

finished pictures:

the full res images can be seen here: sta.sh/22d6sinahcqm?edit=1
more tutorials: cakeindafridge.deviantart.com/…

it helps to use 'clipping group' and 'selection source' when shading - you can see how to use them here my sai brushes + tips

AND A QUICK NOTE: a lot of people think my tutorials try to explain the 'right' way to do art, and then go on to try to correct me
THERE IS NO RIGHT OR WRONG WAY TO DO ART D8<
this is how i do my art, and it's fine if you do it another way, just don't try to 'correct' me or anyone else
SORRY IF I SOUND LIKE A DICK but it gets annoying after a while 8D

you need to make sure the lineart has no holes or breaks in it ; u ;
i do change the transparency around alot, but 30-ish is usually what i have it at

So that and maybe fix a few stragglers? Because I have my lineart brush at like .8 lmao

oh wow xDD my lineart brush is usually at about 12
but then again i do press very lightly
yeah, just make sure the lineart is all closed up otherwise the magic wand tool doesn't select it cleanly ; u ;

One thing I always have trouble with is laying down the shape of the fur before shading, like around the neck especially to give some volume.Β
I'm sure this comes from a lot of practice but I can't seem to get it down~

Cakeindafridge In reply to Dj-Luka [2016-07-23 12:18:19 +0000 UTC]

just need to study a lot of photos i guess xDD since there's many different types of fur, and vary from animal to animal

Thank you
SO MUCH for this. I've always to try this kind of shading and idk why I find it so difficult. Your little tips tutorial helped to cause I don't know why I never realized to go with the flow of the lineart/coloring

Thank you for this tutorial!

Could you make a tutorial on lining though? on line weight and whatnot , my lines always look flat and "dead"

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Cakeindafridge In reply to katalavaino [2016-07-23 12:21:13 +0000 UTC]

like i said in a previous comment, i'm probably not going to do a whole tutorial dedicated to lining just because everyone's style is different and whatnot ; n ;

I have one question though, hope I didn't overlook it somewhere; what are your settings for the blending tool? that'd be really helpful I had to re-install my SAI not too long ago and lost everything *sobs* never managed to find a good blend tool

My biggest problem with fur has always been the volume. Fur always looked very flat and I didn't manage to draw those clumps as you call them. I assume it's mostly practice to do that but after all the time I've been trying and never gotten how the fuck to do that, my question would be if you have any tips on how to learn that better? :/

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Cakeindafridge In reply to uniccin [2016-07-08 00:35:03 +0000 UTC]

i'd say you're probably not doing enough shading ; u ; maybe try adding a little more fur detail to the lighter parts of the shading that you wouldn't normally (assuming you already don't)
better contrast might also help
but it mainly is just practice !

FriesianKiss In reply to ??? [2016-06-28 20:24:54 +0000 UTC]

This is by far my favorite shading tutorial, thanks so much for making this!Β
I do have a couple questions:

1) What opacity do you put the shading layers on, and are they both the same opacity or is the second one a higher opacity than the first?

2) What do you mean "locking the shading layer and coloring over it"? (how do you lock a layer?

(sorry if I sound stupid, I'm new to digital art and SAI)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

Cakeindafridge In reply to FriesianKiss [2016-06-28 23:52:13 +0000 UTC]

often i don't lower the opacity of the shading layer because the shading colour is already light enough, but if i do i never lower it below 80%!
and it seems the second question has been answered already xD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FriesianKiss In reply to Cakeindafridge [2016-06-29 01:22:33 +0000 UTC]

if you don't lower the opacity then how do the colors of the subject (in this case the canines) show through?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Cakeindafridge In reply to FriesianKiss [2016-06-29 03:04:38 +0000 UTC]

i don't quite understand? D8 the layer mode should be set to 'multiply' so it shows through to the other layer

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FriesianKiss In reply to Cakeindafridge [2016-06-29 04:08:58 +0000 UTC]

Yea! that's what I meant. Β When I shade I usually pick a dark color and lower the opacity so that's why I was confused by how you do it, but I'm definitely going to try it your way!Β Thanks so much for you patience and answering all my stupid questions >.< You've been so helpful <3
