//i'll feature questions asked in the comments so you can easily see if your question has already been asked before! 8DAAAA LOOK I DID IT 8DD
pls ignore any spelling mistakes eue
drawing done in sai
editing done in gimp
full body took about 3-4 hours to shade, bust took about 2 hours
i really never know if what i say in these tutorials is helpful or not, so if you have any questions i'm more than happy to answer them ; u ; <3

it helps to use 'clipping group' and 'selection source' when shading - you can see how to use them here my sai brushes + tips
AND A QUICK NOTE: a lot of people think my tutorials try to explain the 'right' way to do art, and then go on to try to correct me
THERE IS NO RIGHT OR WRONG WAY TO DO ART D8<
this is how i do my art, and it's fine if you do it another way, just don't try to 'correct' me or anyone else
SORRY IF I SOUND LIKE A DICK but it gets annoying after a while 8D

did you set the opacity to a certain number or the brush automatically does that?

I absolutely love this tutorial. I also like that you put the timing on there. I sometimes get a bit impatient when it comes to shading and want to do it fast. Indeed taking time gives a better result.Β

When you did the initial shading layer of the illustration with the two canines (the one where the shadows had a pink shade to it), was the shading layer in multiply?
Thank you for this tutorial I'm going to try doing the gradient thing at the end :>

I have to say, this is one of the most helpful shading tutorials I have seen pretty much ever. It's comprehensive with lots of examples, and being a person who adores your style of lighting and line work, it's really interesting to see the "how" and "why" behind things. Absolutely fantastic; I can't say thank you enough !Β

How did you achieve the fading effect in the far-away limbs on them? In the last step they make a nice perspective effect.
I've been trying to look it up, but I don't know what to call it Β

i love the tutorial and the way you shade, it's quite helpful with shading fur and fuzzy things, but sadly I only use Fire Alpaca and still kind of a noob at using it, but thank you for making this, it'll definitely help me in the long runΒ

Okay I see how you have a lot of extra fur lines in your line art...could you possibly make a tutorial on how you know where to put the extra fur lines so its easier to shade? I know looking at a reference helps and I've tried it but its hard to see and tell where the lines are... Sos

What opacity do you use for your shading layer? Just right about 50%?
π: 0 β©: 1
Cakeindafridge In reply to Dredorida [2016-08-24 06:22:25 +0000 UTC]
for the full body drawing, both shading layers were set at 100% opacity (both on 'multiply') because the shading colour was light enough to keep it at 100%
and for the headshot the first layer was on 100% and the second was 57% (set to 'shade') because the 'shade' setting gives a much more intense effect!

I find the erasing technique to be more difficult than actually drawing in the shaded regions manually and sort of like, leaving open spots where the fur effect takes place, if you understand what I mean.. but I'll give this another shot since I really liked this tutorial. Do you by chance have the tool settings for the eraser when you're erasing the areas?Β
π: 0 β©: 1
Cakeindafridge In reply to shapsi [2016-08-10 09:22:48 +0000 UTC]
the erasing brush is in the tutorial! it's simply the 'shading brush' with the inverted setting, shown in the first section of the tut!
and yeah i understand what you mean! i used to shade that way but my shading always turned out extremely messy, as you couldn't get nice smooth strokes for the fur
you get used to it the more you use it <3

This is a great tutorial! But I have one question: how do you make the eraser strokes look like fur? I've tried techniques similar to this, yet the eraser marks just look like... Flat brush strokes. Sorry if it's a dumb question, but no matter how much I try to shade like this the fur always comes out looking so flat, and not like fur at all.

you might have the 'max dens prs' or 'hard <-> soft' settings too high (since i can't see those in the picture you sent)
try playing around with those?

what are your selection settings? like the magic wand? Mine is set on +0 Transparency Strict but in some of your speedpaints it looks like you just click it once and bam, perfect selection xD
