Description
Just after uploading this I realized that the title 'Coloring Tips' isn't really... tips on how to color.... so yeah the title of the deviation is more accurate.Q. On what opacity do you use your brushes to paint/blend colors?
A. I usually use the watercolor brushes around 10-40% opacity. Otherwise, the colors becomes either too weak or too strong. For the water brush, I recommend 10% opacity, and for the paint brush, I recommend going 100% because it's not meant for blending anyways.
Q. How to set the brush opacity?
A. Please take a look at this. sta.sh/214ufkvzwech
Q. What if I don't want to color at the same layer? What if I want to do the shading / highlights at a different layer? How to blend at different layer?
A. Please take a look at this set of tutorial. sta.sh/22a53jygighf

I didn't use scatter brush so it probably was a glitch, but don't worry, it's under control for now.

I got a question. Is the coloring all done on the same layer? D: or are they separate layers? Like shading is one layer and the highlighting is another?

Yes, in the example I give up there, I use only one layer for coloring her hair.
but if you do want to use a different layer to put shading and highlights, that's also doable, especially if you use the "water" settings to blend it. For example, I did that with some parts of this image here :
But in all of my works, I mainly use one layer for everything, though. My computer is a tad slow, so I can't have the luxury of 38488385 layers in one file.

Hello! I decided to make a mini-tutorial on how to do shading and highlights on another layer.
I am copy-pasting my artist comment from the tutorial because I am on my phone at the moment LOL but here it is:

I was having trouble with FireAlpaca's blending till I found this, because Firealpaca is the best free program I've ever seen but every free programs has its ups and downs

I'm glad it helped you, though. Because I finally found the right combinations after hours and hours of tweaking and trial and error LOL
They do, they do. ups and downs, huh...
> Photoshop has lots of filters and cool effects, but it's not great (read : sucks so bad) at blending colors smoothly like sai or even firealpaca does. This is also because the program isn't intended for painting, but more to photo manipulation.
> Sai is better but the file extension .sai is really rarely used, so it makes the user dependent on the program should they use .sai exclusive features (for example, the fringe effect that gives the famous watercolor edge look)
> Firealpaca is almost like paint and sai making a lovechild. #bRICKED---- super limited features but has sai's watercolor tool, though the settings are, again, limited. good for beginners and those who just started drawing.
But sometimes people just need to find the right combination. For me, drawing in FA and then edit it in PS is my usual workflow, and now i've gotten used to it.

True, most artists use a program for drawing then a program for the after effects.
I use FireAlpaca and Gimp. I used to use Illustudio and Gimp but I didn't like that program very much, not only was is not translated properly but its over featured, Illustudio is sai, photoshop and open canvas all in one. Many people think thats a good thing but its practically has everything even 3D function so I don't like that. I like the simple stuff. I used to use sai a very long time ago before a grew a hatred for the program. I don't like sai because every one uses it and I Hate photoshop for the same reason and the fact there's no trial and its so expensive.
Everyone using Sai makes it boring, it just takes all the fun out of it. So I started using Gimp by itself but because it's just a powerful image editor, it didn't do me any good. Then I discovered FA and fell in love, nice simple and got all the stuff I need, not over loaded and not over used and sucked boring^^

I'm glad it helped! and it's good to experiment~
oh and as a footnote, i usually set the brush's density at really low value to make the blending smoother, around 10 or so

do you have any tips on how to make a good inking brush in fire alpaca?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
cakwe In reply to Scolanlc [2013-10-04 01:33:28 +0000 UTC]
all this time, i've been inking with the default pen brush that comes with FA...
personally, when inking i like thicker and opaque lines, so that brush works just fine with me. And when my hand is unable to make stable lines, i use correction at 19 and do it slowly....
sorry if i am not able to help at all!

For me, i clicked the "new brush" icon, and selected "watercolor" instead of "pen" at the type dropdown menu.
Perhaps you need to update to the newer version of firealpaca?

cakwe In reply to NotListeningCat [2013-08-01 15:29:59 +0000 UTC]
When using my laptop, i usually go between 2000 to 5000 pixels, but occasionally when doing something more serious i blow it up to 9000-ish.... and then i wonder why is it running so slowly
The maximum pixel size in firealpaca is 10 000 pixels though.
