the puffins swoop high as she dives below, and her guides are now a shoal of iridescent fish. with the geode ensconced within her shattered chest, welded in place with gold, Porcelain throws herself after the murmuration.

it’s not an easy journey. the saltwater splashes through her hollow body, mixing with her elemental and washing it away while her tulip leaves are tugged this way and that, the petals swirling haphazardly amongst the bubbles. she paddles with her paws but she doesn’t really know how to swim, so, buoyed by the brislings’ encouraging glances, she goes lax and lets the current pull her along after them.

finally, the shoreline is back within view. her feet touch the sand and she can propel her own way forward, breaching the surface and squinting into the suddenly unfiltered sunlight. she stumbles up the beach on wobbly sea legs. strewn across the sand in her path are pebbles and rocks and boulders, all with a colour and texture so different from the cliff they’ve been eroded from. some have been beaten by the ocean even more so than herself and lay broken.

but she doesn’t feel pity for them. being broken isn’t such a bad thing, and for these rocks, it has only revealed the crystals hidden inside them — yellow, gold, amber, red, perfectly matching the humming rock within her chest.

when this whole thing is over, Porcelain will join me in admiring the horrors of the ocean from a safe distance.
