Description If this looks familiar...it was because I liked the pose for Fisher so much, that I wanted to do a tobiano as well. It just took longer to get him done! I also made some corrections to this one that I wasn't happy with in the other one. Maybe I should do two of everything

Nicely done.
Mind me asking what you used to color this?

Thank you! I used chalk pastels for the background and Prismacolors for the horse.

Amazing!
I have prisma colored pencils as well, yet I can't seem to figure out just how to use them correctly.

Hehe, thanks again

If you look at some of my older stuff, you'll see that I didn't know how to use them either! A little trial and error, plus lots of experimenting helps!

Sometimes it comes down to paper. I've been doing some horse sketch cards on textured paper, and this was a bad choice! It can be harder to make something look solid. Next time I'll use nice, smooth Bristol board.

I often use chalk pastels in combination with pencil crayons. Some people do a watercolour wash first, but I find stretching the paper to be a burden Plus you can always erase chalk pastels if you make a mistake! Laying down the colours first in chalk pastel helps get rid of the white spots that often appear with pencil crayons. You can press really hard to avoid this, but sometimes you want a nice subtle touch!

One thing with pencil crayons is that it can be hard to achieve proper value. I save the dark areas sometimes for markers (unlike Lazy Grazer though ). Wax bloom is a problem for most pencil crayon brands and another reason why dark areas sometimes seem cloudy after a while. This can be avoid by spraying the picture with fixative as you go.

Although it is terribly old, you can see my process in this wolf picture - [link]

HTH! If you have any questions, just LMK

Ahh.
All I use is computer paper. I really don't have the time to get better paper, let alone, the money. All my money goes to my horse.

Oh boy, I hear ya, horses can be really expensive pets.

I have found that even half decent cardstock is good to draw on. Staples has packages meant for report covers for $9 (probably $6US) and sometimes Michaels has cardstock packs on sale too.
