Description
Kaa was such a wonderful character in the jungle book - it really irks me he got downgraded to a secondary villain in the animated movie. The world needs more ancient, wizened, snake-mentors.Prints are available here: fineartamerica.com/featured/thβ¦

Disney's Kaa is so far removed from the original that I just treat him as an original character to the adaptations.

Lovely illustration! I too agree they passed the opportunity to have more screen time with Kaa by reducing him or her in the live action film to a villain of sorts. I was hoping with Scar Jo doing the voice, they'd bring back the mentor sort of character.Β

Let's all thank Scarlett Johansson, for not ruining a good Disney character!

I think Scarlet Johansson did pretty well for the snake!~
I thought it was more... Wicked and sinister~

Yeah, being in snake coils is kind of like being wrapped up in warm comfy cushions. According to a friend of mine at least. lol.

They did it because the cast was mostly male

I know that. It's basically just political correctness. But that's not really a proper excuse. For example, I would have made Bagheera female because he was so feminine and motherly in the books, not out of PC.

I know. I'm just saying, if it were up to me. The whole thing would have been a lot different. Jungle Book hasn't been given a cinematic justice since 1970.

This is so cool!! I love Kaa and The Jungle Book! Don't get me wrong, I love the Disney Kaa, but Kipling's Kaa is so much better.

I like this so much! Recently I started looking up the jungle book and was intrigued to find that Kaa in the original novel, was quite heroic and a wonderful mentor to Mowgli. I remember seeing the Disney film and just remembered him as the creepy snake that wanted to devour Mowgli. It's amazing how Disney Disneyfies or should I say destroys other works of written art. I wish we had a Kaa like the one in the novel.

Thank you for this! Lovely work capturing the friendship and trust these two hunters had for each other.
Yes, I agree. Read the book long after seeing the film and was very pleasantly surprised by the difference that made for this character especially. Nice to know that originally, Β the snake wasn't automatically reduced to a cliche symbol of clumsy evil. Can only assume that the filmmakers disliked snakes. *shrugs*

I'm glad you like it :3 Poor snakes - always getting a bad rap. I really admire Kipling for his portrayal of all the different animals as having their own particular dignity (with the exception, perhaps, of the monkeys ) No "good" animals or "bad" animals, just different parts of a society

Pedophile? That is insulting to Walt Disney's great work. Not to mention that Walt died in the middle of production due to lung cancer. Show some respect! In the movie, Kaa was just a regular old snake looking for a meal...Natural behavior.

Keseko In reply to RukarioHadou [2016-07-20 17:06:48 +0000 UTC]
How was he not a pedophile? He kept coiling around a half-naked child like some creep. Furthermore, it is not natural behaviour, as pythons don't eat humans. Also, it's not disrespectful to mention that since he was mentioning the movie, not Disney himself.

Disrespecting to Walt's memory it may be, but it's kind of hard to ignore the fanbase that's ignited from those scenes in the Jungle Book.Β

That would have made an excellent book illustration. Speaking of Kaa's depictions, take a look at the Soviet version of 'Mowgli'. Kaa is true to his character there and the cartoon itself is generally more seriously-themed and even grim at times.
