Description Watercolour, 20 * 28 cm.

So.. I haven't painted in a year, and this is my first go after the long break. I took the reference photo of Buttercup, who is a three-toed sloth, at The Sloth Sanctuary in Costa Rica last December. She was truly enchanting, as was the country.
For some reason, my scanner has emphasized the grain of the paper; it looks a little smoother in real life.

How do you get the individual hairs to stand out so well when using watercolor?

By using masking fluid to save out the white of the paper, then refining the edges with a fine brush once it's removed. Lots of fiddling!

I'm so happy you like it, Nige! I guess I took on a rather complicated motif for not having painted in a year, and with the photo being close to my heart I didn't want it to turn out anything less than perfect. (Dream on, hehe..) I set the bar and expectations too high, but then I'm almost never happy with any of my work. As you know.. At least the likeness is good, and I'm glad to have finished the painting instead of giving up. I have you to thank for that, you always encourage me and spur me on. So, thank you, for your sweet and loyal support.

Wouldn't it be freaky, if one day, they did?

Thanks very much, Beto! I think the eyes turned out rather well, but I'm not very happy with the rest (as you know). At least the likeness is good. I'll probably paint her again some day, I've got about 100 photos to choose from.
