Ok, I changed this to show all of my progress steps, with the new addition of the last step.

Full Version of Completed Piece - [link]

** Original Comments **

Yes, I'm trying for a realistic painting, lol. Key word: trying, lmao. These are just the base colors and I'll be working to blend them as I work.

Now, if I can just make my tablet behave, maybe I can finish this in my lifetime, lol. I'm hoping that updating the drivers is all it needed. I'm running Windows XP 64bit now and the website for my tablet doesn't list any 64bit drivers.

*** Update #1 ***

I added a little more to the base colors and blended them a little bit more. I also added some shadows and highlights of details to the eye area and the muzzle.

*** Update #2 ***

Ok, I started on a little more depth to the cheek and muzzle. I also started some of the shadows cast by the bridle.

*** Update #3 ***

I added more of the BASE colors for the rest of the neck, I still might tweak some around. Expanded on a little more of the fur texture at the top of the neck. And started work on the bridle details. I like how the leather looks, but I think I still need to work on the metal parts, lol.

*** Update #4 ***

Now, I've completed the details to the bridle. I think I got the metal parts right now. I still need to start on the reins. I started with the mane and forelock. I'm not sure if I'm satisfied with them yet, lol.

Anyway, still a ways to go before I'm done and I haven't even thought about what I should do for a background, lol.

*** Update #5 ***

I finished a lot of the details. I changed the background color. I'm still trying to sketch out a proper background, but they aren't satisfying me, lol.

He doesn't need a background in my opinion. It may add too much actually, as detailed as he is. I'd leave it as is.

I was starting to think the same thing, lol. That's one of the reasons why I haven't been liking the sketches I have for a variety of backgrounds; they are making it look too busy.

Backgrounds do that sometimes.

*strokes the soft fur* ohh it looks so touchable Great job so far the ears do look a tad small for the clyde's head shape but its still overall amazing

I'm really not sure where all of these defects in anatomy are coming from, lol. Someone else said that the chin looked off. I was using a reference picture, so let me go find the link again somehow, lol...

yeah actually i looked at pic i have of some clydes and i guess because they have such thick(bulky type) heads makes their ears look small. so yours is actually ok srry bout that

The fur is amazing! Like what said, it needs a little work in making the anatomy accurate. The poll(chin) is a little too round, may be just the breed though. The ears seem just a tad bit too short, too.
I'm working on a realistic horse too. Mine is in a slightly different style, though. So it's really not that realistic.

I'm debating on adding actual hair strands like you have would make it better...I was wondering if you could give me some tips?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Candrence In reply to haubing [2009-01-22 22:59:47 +0000 UTC]

I'm just going to say that it is the breed as I was using a reference picture to show me how the clydesdale head is shaped.

I absolutely love the shade of red that you used on that horse! Tips, huh? Hmmm, well, for the small hairs on the chin, I usually use like a 2 or 3 point-sized hard-edge brush. I usually make them on two different layers; one to sit over your image, but the other should go under the image of the horse so that you can make some of the hairs look like they are coming from both sides of the horse.

For the fur, I used a 3-point sized hard-edge brush (might be different based on the resolution of your piece). Now, for this project, I used the Dodge and Burn tools (Dodge = makes colors lighter, Burn = darker, lol. You'll want the exposure for each to be 50% or less, I sometimes went as low as 10%) and basically scribbled over the area, making sure to keep with the direction of the fur.

That looks very real! especially in small view
what i think though, you need to spend more time on the actually drawing part. the coloring looks amazing but the anatomy is a tad less than realistic.
lol i have the opposite problem i can get the drawing perfect but i lack in coloring skill.

here is my first attempt at drawing a digital realistic horse [link]

Candrence In reply to vengeofthestars [2009-01-19 06:45:07 +0000 UTC]

*shrug* I'm not sure what I did wrong with the anatomy of a horse head. It is a Clydesdale, so I guess it has a different head-shape than a Shetland Pony or Thoroughbred would have.

Your coloring is still really, really great. I wouldn't have thought it was your first attempt.

i think the only area that made it look a little odd was the mouth/chin area. im not sure why. everything else looks great

n.n; aww thanks so much. i didnt expect people to like it but i have gotten many good comments on it. o.O
