Description
this image is a bit dated...and I had male counterpart that was suppose to go along with it, but with my computer being dead I guess the girls only version will have to do. lets just pretend this is the cast for a show about an all girls high school. well call it "Fool School"To the un-Trained eye... I am sure this looks like a somewhat well balanced cast...so many girls! so many cliques! so many colors and styles!
but the reality is it's the same girl...just recolored and restyled over and over.
Underneath it all, they are the exact same girl.
They all have the same facial features, they are all the same weight and the same height... what's wrong with casts like this?...they are BORING!...dull, plain, run of the mill and forgettable!
not a cast I wanna make... THIS is like my worst nightmare!
This tutorial explains it a lot better than I can.
I was gonna post this huge, long winded rant on my art blog about it but for now I'll just post this short sweet version here. I'm too tired to get all into what I think so take from it what you will.

the style that their done in...has nothing to do with if a bunch of characters look the same- lots of styles do it.
I would call THAT style you just showed me?...high fashion anime. but don't get discouraged! it's TOTALLY possible to have different looking anime characters. cowboy be bop did it.

I agree.
I've never wanted a style where everyone's faces are built of the same basics.
That's why all of my characters look like they come from different stories.

I don't think thats a bad thing!!! better a bunch of characters who look like they are from different stories than a town that look entirely inbred.

When I see things like this I think of old TV shows for girls that have a bunch of girls who look all the same AND have bland personalities
My characters usually have different shapes and sizes and I do admit it's fun making them different, (but I do have trouble doing so with male characters).
although seeing how plain it is to have characters all look similar I think this can be redeemed if characters were given distinctive and unique personalities. Although I definitively agree with what your implying People should still try to make their characters look different instead of getting so lazy with the designs

I love these two clones drawings, and your explanation Not only does this looks like a television show that someone out there would commission, it does a sweet job of showing how some shows and artists galleries can still totally lack variety in many ways while putting different hats on the same character and calling them new (I know big parts of my gallery can get like that lol )
I guess there are many of us who need to keep this in mind when designing characters!

Nice one! When I draw characters I try to give them different body types and facial features, I suck of course; but by Jove I try (so does Speedball from "The Dragon Doctors", God bless him); I even tried to draw a group of monks once (you know, same clothes, no hair).
More artist should do it, girls specially are always alike (same with actresses)

Yeah, I can be occasionally accused of that problem, though I do tend to keep them as far apart as I can in different comics. Nice job nonetheless, my fave clone has to be the cocktail dress one!
Keep up the more varied work, Candy!

really!?... I never thought you had that problem, I can easily tell your characters apart.
IF ANYTHING...I'd say your cast is kinda vanilla...I don't mean vanilla as in plain/boring I mean literally vanilla, EVERYONE is white...but not just white, the exact same shade of white... it's like eveyrone lives under umbrellas 24/7

I am well aware of my artistic racism. All of em were done when I was inking with limited markers, so peach was just the default color I used for em. I have thought about adding some, but I don't wanna add a character it JUST for the sake of diversity.
With computer coloring, I should work on divinding up the pinks and the pales.
Sorry though if it offends!

well...some great things have been caused because lack of colors...Like Timmy Turners pink outfit or the Simpson being yellow. but flesh colors are another story...You could always have inked characters and only show them in color when using digital coloring...diversity is always a great reason to add in characters.
BUT that's not my only point...I mean...yes adding minorities to stories is always a good idea- even if they are just background characters, customers, one shots or whatever... but my real point is everyone being the same shade of white...it's like..doesn't anyone go outside? play spots, tan do anything that would make them darker? or stay inside behind a desk all day and they'd be paler?
just yaknow...anything.

Man, I get so much what you mean. How can someone draw the same body types over and over when it's so darn fun to play with proportions? I could make a guy who's weak and skinny, but tall and cute. A guy who's strong and muscular, but with no eyebrows. A girl who's got huge hips but no chest to speak of... THE LIST GOES ON!
