This was inspired by many things, the quote is from a MCR video, the subject inspired by watching the documentary "thin" I've always been curious about eating disorders I never understood them, I watched the documentary because I wanted to understand more about them--and it didn’t answer any of my questions at all... it was the same thing over and over again " I can't eat that much because I'll get fat" and I'm just kinda sitting there going " so?" they never elaborated more on that in the documentary and it bugged me. There are WORSE things in the world to be.but I already knew the answer... the answer is that people today (it's not just girls anymore it's getting boys too) are brainwashed--oh yea I said it, BRAINWASHED into believing that only one type of look can be pretty, and if you don't believe me look at advertisements 92% of all ads are pretty skinny white and young and the other 7% are minorities, it's bullshit. What has happened today? And I say today because in the past the most beautiful women of all time like. Marilyn Monroe and Betty Paige were sizes 9 and 12 and what’s the standard today? Like 6 or below? It’s a standard of beauty that is COMPLEALTY arbitrary.
Goth, skater, punk, prep, cheerleader, geek, raver WHATEVER the style if you search em on Google the "sexy" versions of these genres are always rail thin. It’s the saaaame thing just packaged differently.
Now...with all that said...MEET VIRGINIA! Some of you might remember her stick figure self in my comic "lol teenagers" [link] we'll here’s the real deal, not much different form the stick figure version I’m afraid. She was created for the simple fact that Marie Jayne needed a friend, and I needed a bad character who WASENT on drugs just to show I'm not bias I hate everyone equality. she’s so fun to draw, always I always said if yer gonna make a character rail thin do it correctly <3 because I swear some of the "styles" out there if they were translated into real people they would look like this (warning: nudity)[link] and I really really hope no one wants that. because unless you live in a third world country like Nicaragua there’s no excuse to look that way, none.
No I didn’t fuck up on drawing her legs their SUPPOSE to look like new born pony legs, expect a character sheet of her in the future. Now a lot of people ask me “gee why do you care so much about people with ED's?" I really don't because honestly? in this world it's survival of the fittest and Darwin says let the weak die, however I have a few friends who have these types of issues, I even dated someone with anorexia once, hopefully by making a character that’s so brainwashed she can hardly function people can learn and see things they way they want too, instead of how the media tells them it should look.
As for me? What do I think is beautiful and perfect?...I think everything has beauty, it's just that not everyone can see it.

And I don't think they were brainwashed. The world is just that dumb. It has to appeal to them personally in the first place for the media to be able to "brainwash" them in the first place right? From what I understand, it's the media catering to the audience. Shows are pitched and chosen on the basis of how well they will sell, same with products, toys, books and comics.
This also reminds me of something my dad said about a girl at a shop that liked him, but she was very very thin. He said she was pretty in the face and very nice but he could never be attracted to her because "She had nothing to sink your teeth into."

I've met so many girls like this, and, much as it saddens me to say this given that I'm freaking majoring in psychology, they're usually bitches. They're as judgmental of others as they are of themselves, which is saying something, they fluctuate between thinking they're fat (as if that's the end of the world) and thinking they're TEH HAWT. It's one of many sickening things that make me hate the media. Artistically - good job on the gauntness, the vacant expression, and the hands grasping at the refrigerator, but it does seem as if the line of her torso would be bent a bit more - attitude-wise, she may have a stick up her ass, but she doesn't physically. I hope.

yea anorexia... is pretty bad.. but then it gets really bad once the girl get bulimia. which is the actual disease.... and it can get pretty bad there.. hell.. i heard that there are some cases where the girls save their vomit in jars and stash it away because they feel attatched to their vomit and don't want to get rid of it. o_O pretty fucked up.
but yeah.. you are right about media... but i dount it will ever make a huge change..even with all these women becoming anorexic/bulimic. if its making the companies money, they will put their moneymaking before the well being of the people. its just how things work.
tho, i have heard that in modeling, in Europe European modeling agencies won't allow really skinny or really small sized girls to be models. it is banned. so.. there is a little improvement happening.

anorexia and bulimia are two diffenrt things tho..not all anorexia cases turn into bulimia (tho I'm sure some do)I don't think it's a diseases. no ones FORCING them to put their fingers down there throat and puke. cancer is a diseases.
ands YES! Milan I'm so proud of them! they put a ban on underweight models and they measure them all on their BMI. and BMI's don't lie. I'm so happy about that.

oh i know the difference between the two. and how bulimia can develop when the person stays anorexic and doesn't do anything to stop for a long period of time... sure women bring it upon themselves to begin with....but bulimia is a real disease....
i saw a movie in Health a long time ago about a girl that becomes anorexic and then develops bulimia.. but i can't remember what it was called (this was in the 8th grade) but it was really good in showing how it happens to those women :/

Both anorexia and bulimia are "real diseases" and they are both physical AND mental, you twit. Bulimics RARELY go under a healthy BMI due to their binging and purging cycle while Anorexics have to be significantly underweight to even be classified as such. Before that they are just EDNOS (Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified) there are some anorexics that they turned to purging when they are forced to eat, but that is not bulimia because the girl is still using “restriction” as her primary means of controlling her weight.
They are not things girls "give themselves" they are branches of OCD and are often a byproduct of Depression and Body Dimorphic Disorder.

It is actually a mental illness, and it's not stupidity; a good deal of people with EDs are very intelligent. In fact, hard-working A-types are more likely to develop EDs than idiots. Almost everyone with an ED can articulate that logically they know they're skin and bones, so obviously they're smart enough to know that something's wrong. They're just crippled by the part of their brain that doesn't work right. Often they'll talk about their illness "talking to me" or "whispering in my ear", which is akin to schitzophrenic hallucinations and definitely not a choice.
And it isn't easy to gain weight. Feeding burgers to someone as emaciated as this girl is could easily cause Refeeding Syndrome and could trigger her kidneys to start failing. Please educate yourself on a subject before jumping to conclusions.

No one gives themselves an addiction. Alcoholism is often genetic, and they have measureable brain chemistry and activity that doesn't appear in non-addicts. They can choose to pick up a bottle, but they didn't choose the miswired brain that caused that unnatural urge in the first place.
