Description
UPDATED FOR 2011! this chart is out of date, please direct your attention to the new and improved versionFinally it's done!!! this was a little project I gave myself to do. to see how many different body types I could come up with- and this isn't even the tip of the ice burg folks!
and I'll tell you exactly why too. it annoys the living piss out of me when people put their character cast pictures up and there is NO body type differential at all. you'll get height differences and race differences IF YER LUCKY... but body type seems to come last ( sometimes race comes last in character development it depends on the person making the characters)) and I think... that having nothing but 6 foot tall Aryan super models in your cast is a very amateur mistake when it comes to character development. it's boring, and casts like this FAIL the silhouette test.
( fyi: the silhouette test is when you black out everything on your characters and line them up to see if other people can tell them apart from one another, to make the test extra hard make yer characters bald for the test)
" the world is not full of reds and blues it's full of wonderful shades and hues!" this is a quote from an ad - the product and the ad were horrible but those words were very true and i applied them to body types. the world is not full of fats and thins it's full of everything in between! I apply most of these to my own characters, also theres a few that got thrown in there just for shits and giggles and aren't to be taken too seriously.
I could add more to this chart but this is enough for now. it's mostly a personal reference but I do hope it's useful to others who are working on more chracter diversity in their lineup, I know I always am. I recommend "force: dynamic life drawing for animators" by Michael D mattesi for anyone who needs more reference.
Edit: Male version now here! - [link]

can you provide evidence for your claim that "rulers" are the most common body type?Β because, the library of congress- and most medical and statistical journals site the pear shape as the most common.
that being said. Not, all women have wide hips, some are pretty shapeless - good thing this chart doesn't apply to real woman, it's for cartoons.

In fashion websites like ShopYourShape, rulers are said to be most common among American women?Around 45% of women... I'm sure certain body shapes are more common in different parts around the world.

I am sorry, but fashion websites are not a credible resource, especially in regards to women's fashion as most of the time their sizes are literally made up by the manufacturer or the store. Plus most fashion outlets frequently mislabel their clothing sizes to deceive women so that they can sell clothing and make bigger profits.
Women, on average have excess weight in their buns, thighs and hips. that's where it goes and that is why women are shaped like that. Not to say that they're aren't women that don't have these features. But it's not as common. In fact less than 3% of all women (globally) have that "cone" / V body shape you mentioned earlier and I'm certain only slightly more have the shapeless form or "ruler" that you speak of. and most of which are probably found in Asia.
The fashion industry is very cruel to the average woman as you can see in this article.Β so we see it a lot in modern media. But that's not the average.

I have no idea why you would want to get a boob job, I mean from small to large,Β breasts are breasts.
And also, you don't have that natural look anymore. The most attractive breast size is medium,
small look great to and large are okay unless fake.

Well, who knows. Its because in my case, I often get somewhat crude remarks on how small-chested I am and skinny girls with huge fake boobs are complimented. Not fair. But at the same time, I just try to ignore this idea of getting a boob job as us small-breasted girls also have our advantages.

Hey, big-boobed girls get nasty remarks, too. Β Yer not alone. Β I'm a natural D-cup and I'm in between the "average" and "chubby" on this chart; a bit more than average but not to the extent of chubby (not that there's anything wrong with either). Β I also know someone who literally 5 sizes larger than me NATURALLY. Β Girls like us often get called sluts and whores just for having big boobs. Β You're pretty much going to get comments no matter what you do, so don't let society be your only drive to change your body.
I'm sorry if you're not happy with your body, but if you want to get a boob job, that's still your choice, and you are free to do so! Β :> Β Just think about why you want to do it and the possible risks involved. Β Remember, unfortunately people are still going to shame you for having implants since not everyone's happy with everything, but the most important thing is that YOU'RE okay with it and it's what YOU want.
And just because: personally I find flat chested, small-chested, medium-chested, and big-chested girls attractive. Β They all have their special charms and there's so many diverse body types, I don't know how I could just pick just one. Β xD

And it not also that. Also, since I have really fair skin, I get comments in how pale I am. So in addition, guys also like tanned girls better than pale girls or whatever their natural color is. Why that? What's wrong with being pale or you natural skin color? Even dark-skinned prople tan. I don't get it.

Women aren't naturally heavier than men. On average men are heavier, but women have more fat for childbearing purposes.

Candy2021 In reply to t3hsniper [2013-04-02 00:06:50 +0000 UTC]
on average men are heavier because it is socially acceptable for men to be heavier and women are forced to do extreme things to their bodies to lose weight and "fit in"
but naturally? women are.
π: 0 β©: 5
t3hsniper In reply to Candy2021 [2015-10-01 06:38:37 +0000 UTC]
I do agree, women are socially pressured to be thin to fit in.Β But naturally men have more muscle mass, we know muscle weighs more than fat.Β Look at healthy men and women based on fat percentages, and you'll find a healthy weight for men will be higher than a woman of similar height and physical fitness.Β So naturally, men are heavier.

Ok, in that respect, you're probably right.Β Though I would question whether that has to do with the fact that it's more acceptable for men to be overweight compared to women in the social eye.

Candy2021 In reply to t3hsniper [2015-10-06 12:25:22 +0000 UTC]
All you have to do is look at TV sitcoms / movies and media in general to know that it's more acceptable for men to be fat than women.
I can think of a ton of sitcoms off the top of my head where the man is almost always fat and/or a slob but the wife is always eye candy and/or thin.
here's a few off the top of my head. "Wait till your father gets home", The Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad ( Stan isn't really fat until he's shirtless but my point still stands), The Honeymooners, Life with Louie, The Flintstones, and in movies too, Knocked Up, Get Him To The Greek, SuperBad, pretty much every movie that Jack Black is in.
and that's just off the top of my head. it's okay for the men to be fat and they're funny or just hearty guys and we accept it. They're cool guys and they always get the always hot girl.
But Can you think of any where there's a plus size women on TV and it's a positive portrayal? Because I sure can't. Anytime there is a woman of size in almost any media they are played off as a joke, as being mannish, a lesbian or all three, Not that there's anything wrong in being a lesbian but it is an unfortunate stereotype that any woman whose body isn't fit for a man must be a lesbian. I'm struggling really hard to think of any plus size women that exist period let alone ones in recent memory and all I've come up with are three. Grenda from Gravity Falls whom I shouldn't even count because she's not a main character - who had a deep husky unfeminine voice (Voiced by a man) ,Β Connie Cunaman from Brickleberry - whom not only has a deep husky voice (also voiced by a man) is a lesbian and whose body is viewed as so repulsive - characters on screen have to psychically restrain themselves from vomiting at the sight of her in a skimpy outfit. and Toot from Drawn Toegther whose voice and look is feminine but she is mostly viewed as grotesque by the rest of the cast.
Positive portrayals or plus size women? I can only think of one and I'm not even sure if I should count her because the arc was entirely about her weight so she's not really a regular character she was more so a tool used to tell an after school like special but Debbie form American Dad... she's plus size, cute and Steven falls in love with her, there really isn't any more problems or jokes thrown at her character that aren't in good fun or any worse than the jokes that are lobbed at any of the other characters on the show. Steven Universe is probbaly the only show on TV now---or ever that has positive plus size female characters who aren't ole, mannish or the butt of jokes.
Life imitates art. these things in our media are a reflection of our society and what is acceptable. I'm not saying that fat men don't also have problems associated with their weight and how others view them because that's not true, they do. But it is no where near the degree that plus size women are. The fact that plus size men have some positive media representation while women have next to nothing is very telling.
PBS game show explains it better than I can in the context of video games if you are curious but it can also apply to other media.

wrong... Women do have more body fat, however men have more muscle and muscle weights more.. so yeah.. if you dont believe me google it... nothing wrong with a chubby lady, we're all beautiful, but if you get a woman and a man of the same size the man will most of the time weight more

Candy2021 In reply to paulaleksandra [2013-10-19 13:16:23 +0000 UTC]
I'm aware that is generally true.
that's why I wasn't talking about muscle mass I was talking about weight in the context of fatness. Not who weighs more. who weighs more is irrelevant in a conversation about how to draw a body type.Β if you get a 150 pound body builder and a 150 pound average person they may weigh the same but they will look vastly different.
also: don't trust Google completely. My sources are college professors and the library of congress.

Hey I'd just like to say, men are naturally heavier.
Not by society, naturally.
Wikianswers says
Men do tend to have more muscle but aside from that they also have bigger, denser and heavier bones. They are also usually taller as well. But even if a woman and man had the same amount of muscle and fat and were the same height men's bones are bigger.
And honestly, that is true. For years it has been a common fact, something I knew for years

I'm finding your artwork very interesting. Especially this drawing. But why do you mean that its socially acceptable for men to be fat or heavier? There are more men than women at gyms working out and getting in shape.
π: 0 β©: 1
Candy2021 In reply to Hilda-the-Great [2013-07-01 03:01:36 +0000 UTC]
Thank you.
I don't know where you got your stats from- I'd like to see your sources because most of the gyms I frequent are full of women running on tread mills.
but even if that is true it's because men work out to gain strength. not necessarily to be more desirable. Because it is expected of them to be "strong"
But yes, in general it's okay for men to bet over weight but not women. because society as a whole teaches men to treat women like objects that need to look appealing and it teaches women to see men as human beings.
sad but true.

Hilda-the-Great In reply to Candy2021 [2013-07-01 08:19:58 +0000 UTC]
Alright. But hold on. How is looking like a lollipop stick gonna be eye candy for men. So men are actually the ones who are stuffing the "size zero" slogan into our minds? If they are well they need to know that severely underweight women may lose their periods which affect fertility and the ability to procreate children. And they still want us to bear them children when we're finding ourselves severely malnourished? Please. So maybe the myth its true. Men are responsible for eating disorders. They are silently leading us to the graveyard.

Candy2021 In reply to Hilda-the-Great [2013-07-01 15:58:35 +0000 UTC]
It is indeed riddled with contractions since it has been scientifically proven than women with more weight not only have smarter babies but in general have a higher life expectancy.
I would not go so far as to say men are responsible. it's advertising that's responsible. Teaching men that they have a higher status if they have a thinner GF because we associate fatness with laziness. even though neither of those things is true.
it all boils down to everyone should be allowed to have the body they want.

that is impossible to determine seeing as how every man has his own unique tastes.
However according to most studies men find an "ideal" body to be around a size 12. - photos-ak.sparkpeople.com/nw/4...
However, it should not be about appealing to a mans taste. this chart is about a woman being comfortable in her own skin.
