Description
New ref 2014You can DOWNLOAD to see the full view image, else you can't view the details. (2000px wide)
ASDFGHJKL
So this is actually pretty old for the most part. The feral references were drawn two years ago and the anthro ones back in January... drew the hands today. I just FINALLY put it all together and decided the final colors (complete with hex values because I'm extra special like that)
This still isn't COMPLETELY finished. Not really, there's a lot more little things I'd still like to add, like poses, other clothing options, spice up the layout, etc. But it serves it's purpose just fine because no one can find older versions of my reference sheets hidden away on my photobucket account.
Too many hours over too many years went into this. Held off finishing for too many reasons to count (GWEAK you're one of them >:E)
SO HERE!
*shoves reference down your throat*
Enjoy seeing some more Rileyness plaguing your computer screens.

What size was the canvas? I can never tell how big or small my canvas should be when making refernces. Seeing how much you fit nicely on this I was wondering what size it was.

This one is 2000x1500 pixels, but these days I may make them even larger for printing at full resolution of 300dpi.
(For reference, to print full quality on a standard US letter sized paper of 8.5in by 11in, you need an image that's 3300x2550 pixels)
I used to have a problem drawing everything very small and fitting only on the computer screen. Now I like making things really big for printing and putting in my portfolio for conventions.
My newer 2015 ref for Riley has a lot more details, it's 3840x2500
Β
So large canvases mostly help for printing purposes, otherwise the goal of a ref is simply to clearly show all the character's details for other people to draw the character, and you don't need a crazy huge canvas to do it. If it's only meant to be viewed on a computer screen, doing a standard size computer screen resolution works great! Something like HD video size of 1920x1080 is perfect, especially if put into any video presentations, because it will fill up the entire screen (notice this canvas will be "widescreen" though and doesn't match the dimensions of a piece of paper if printed out).
This is a 1080p HD Widescreen format ref sheet: (it's technically a *little* taller at 1920x1140, but still very close) If you click on it, you'll see it fits very comfortably filling up the screen. Assuming you have a standard widescreen monitor.
However the REAL version of this ref sheet is actually 3850x2286, because I did want to print it, but I only made a "computer sized" version uploaded online because there was no need to make the full res available to people when it took up the whole screen already and you can clearly view all the details so there was no reason to make it any bigger online.
---------
And my latest ref was SO BIG that I broke it up into two separate images for full res:
Β 4000Γ2200
-
Β 5000Γ2500
The dragon is still a WIP though, I haven't arranged a proper presentation nor have I cleaned up the anthro ref yet. It's been a challenge to arrange the ref sheet because of the giant wings. But for viewing on a computer or phone screen, it is much easier to make it a very tall ref sheet that you have to scroll down to view.
So for now I made it look like this below until I have finished the reference (I still want to draw the head at different angles and show the inside of the mouth and a size chart, as well as her human form, etc. Lots still to do for this character!)
Β 1280x3080
I also made the width of the image the same size as a 720p HD widescreen format (1280x720 are those dimensions by the way, it's the same width and height ratio as the 1080p HD widescreen format, just a smaller/lower res version of it), I tend to like using standard resolutions but sometimes the presentation of the character and fitting everything together will cause me to have to adjust it so everything fits like the one I showed you of Sonar's ref above. For this dragon ref when viewed, I also wanted you to be able to see the side view of the feral dragon with her giant wings on a standard computer screen, so if you full-view it and zoom in here , you can see the side view of the dragon her wings touches the top and her feet touch the bottom of the screen- that's the absolute biggest I could make that image and have you still see the whole thing at once. But of course the dragon was drawn at about twice that size. So to show more details on her head, I made a separate drawing of just the head and at a much higher resolution. That's a sort of trick to add on a ref sheet to make sure everything is communicated clearly.
Anthro Tusaris Patreon Reveal by CanineHybrid 2748Γ1739
And this was another test trying to figure out how to make everything fit together for a reference sheet with different layout and dimensions, which isn't bad, but you have to scroll up and down plus left and right to see everything in the full view. Leaving it smaller fitting comfortably to the computer screen makes the details too hard to see. So I thought it was just easier and I could have more details visible by just making a taller image and having you scroll only one direction: up/down. Still experimenting with it. I may just end up with two or even three separateΒ refs for all the detailsΒ I want to add later.
---
Last example:
Realistic Telephone Ref Sheet by CanineHybrid Β Online version is 2014x1280 but the real version is 4500x2860 so it can be big enough to print.
This was another case of fudging the canvas size/dimensions to fit everything, and you can see I found a way to make things fit together more tightly by overlapping the tail on the wings.
Hopefully that helps!

Wow, thank you for the info I've been struggling with making ref sheets for the longest and I finally found a layout that I liked for my characters. I like what you said about how as long as the features and detail of the character can be clearly seen then it's size didn't need to be so big.

Aww lame, DA only lets you put 5 pictures in a single comment. So here's the other two pictures it killed off:

Hey, would you mind if I used this as a reference for a 3D Model? I asked on photobucket (username is xJaxMx on there as well) but wasn't sure if you'd get it or not (I don't use photobucket like that very often xP ). I'll give credit of course. I'm dieing for a little practice/experience with character/anthro modeling (using Maya2011) >:3

I am making my own fursuit for my own lupine character, and I need to make a reference, so would you be alright if I copy-pasted a pic off this ref and edited into my own ref? I would credit and link to you, of course. (I wouldn't recreate the whole thing, just the 3/4 facing pic at the bottom right)
