Description
Title was gonna be "barnes and noble press will just let you print anything" buuut that was too long.
So yes! I finally put all my LaF OCT entries in print. <3 To be clear, I am not selling these! I could not in good conscience try to make money off of this project, with its competitive/collaborative nature and the cumulatively built world that ensued. And I only own like three characters in it. : D But it turns out, you can print up books pretty easily online! I went through Barnes and Noble press but there are other printers out there. I've only tried the personal print option, so I can't speak for the commercial end.
Aureus and his story (and all of Lost-and-Found-OCT ) just have a very special place in my heart for being the first long form work of fiction I ever completed, and for putting me in such a great community for the two years of the OCT's run. :') And I wanted a hard copy I could hold in my hands and display on a bookshelf. Was cool to see it result in a 211 page book! (Counting the text block, not title or bonus art pages.) I always had a plan to print and bind this up myself by hand, but the logistics of printing a full color work myself were an obstacle. For labor reasons as well as some technical bookbinding/formatting reasons, printing it like this was much easier lol. {For anyone curious on the technicals: They use what's called perfect binding, which is essentially just pages glued together, rather than saddle stitch like I would, which involves a lot of folding and strange collating to get all the pages in proper order in the finished product.}
How has it been 8 years since the tournament's start??? asfwsfkjhk. Well, as previously stated, nostalgia was my drug of choice earlier in the year when I needed to get my mind off the pandemic. That and writing. And this was possibly the most nostalgic thing I could do lol. Just for my own sanity I trimmed a little bit here and there, but really not a ton. This copy comes in at about 68k words.
Formatting all those images in Word was... something lol. But it was very fun to put it all together. : D It was a little pricy to go with B&N Press's premium color option, but I gave it a shot. Turns out it looks like it's just a higher dpi? I printed a standard color option as well for a friend and the ink dot density was observably lower. Neither option handles dark colors very well, which can really be seen in the last image here. Part of the reason I put some bonus art in toward the end was to test out the printer's color handling on more complicated images. And then I completely forgot to photograph the bonus art section here, aside from that one picture. Oops. Maybe I'll upload it later? The edge cut on the book block could also be smoother. There are noticeable diagonal cut lines on the premium copy that were not present in the standard copy. That might just be chance and not something to do with the print quality option. Also, I stubbornly attempted full bleed edges though advised not to. So there were some mismatches with printing and edges. But any pages where it worked were cool.
Do not notice that the odd and even page numbers accidentally have different fonts. You are forbidden from noticing.
If anyone happens to want to read this story, it's all posted online in its original format! Just know that it's a mess in several different ways, I didn't 100% know what I was doing, and I love it dearly~

Edit: And the cover! I basically reused the cover design I did for this bookbinding project: www.deviantart.com/canis-ferox… And the gorgeous portrait there was a commission from witherlings years ago! <3
