Description
See also: canis-ferox.deviantart.com/art… (For clothing examples--and maybe better art lol)Rather than having two separate references I'm just updating the existing submission and modifying/replacing his information for a PM-specific version. I abused the liquify filter revamped the art a little bit too, because in the old version I think he still looked too much like Aureus >:U This should be more character-accurate now. And hopefully has a better-written description in parts : D I'll check for anything I missed tomorrow because right now I should sleep. Not totally happy with the headshot but I think I'm forever doomed to not like the headshot. May end up editing it later.
The top knife is a Russian ballistic knife: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballisti… and the other is just a switchblade. He's more likely to pull out the switchblade in most circumstances. He has more knives but those are two of his favorites.
Name: Rook (of course that's not his given name but it's as close as most people are getting--they might know his last name, Levy, if they're well-informed)
Gender: male
Age: 52
Species: Eurasian Gray Wolf (technically half Eurasian subspecies, half a North American subspecies)
Size: 5'10", 160? lb
Rank/Status/Job: Crew A - pending
Basic Personality: He's often grumpy or irritable, but he's also clever, opportunistic and quick-witted, and can be very charming when he wants to. He has a definite sense of class, and has strong interests in language, culture, and music. His sense of humor is dry, sarcastic and witty. He has a long history of being able to handle whatever situation comes his way, be it by combat, strategy, negotiation, or just getting out of there. He’s generally out to serve his own interests and isn’t much on authority or doing what others want him to if it doesn’t benefit him in some way. Usually short on patience.
Physical Strengths: Quick, strategic movements when fighting. His lean/wiry-muscular build means he's stronger than he looks. Highly experienced and skilled in stealth, unarmed hand-to-hand fighting and small weapons (knives in particular), including throwing knives. He's also a pretty good marksman with a gun. Also doesn't lose consciousness easily for some reason (he’s never really understood this either but it’s usually a good thing).
Physical Weaknesses: Terrible stamina; he used to be a heavy smoker. Heavy running is the worst on this, so that's something he'd only do if desperate. Many years ago he was shot in the right leg; a piece of the shin bone was blown off and it never healed correctly. This bothers him often, but most in cold environments or with strenuous use. Fearing others will take advantage of it, he hides the scar and tries to refrain from favoring the leg. On the lower front/left area of ribcage, there is a spot where he broke a couple of ribs years ago. It’s similar to the issue with his leg but much less drastic (basically the way for this to really hinder him is if he received a direct blow there)
Brief History: He had a poor childhood and learned to look out for himself. Left home at an early age and supported himself mainly through thievery. During this time he developed a high degree of skill in picking locks (and pockets) and taught himself to speak without the cockney accent he’d grown up with, adopting a more standard British one which is still his default. When he was probably around 18 or so he moved to mainland Europe (starting with France), finding that he enjoyed the challenge of learning different languages. There he ran into a powerful criminal organization (known simply as The Organization) that took him in because his skills and aptitude for language showed a lot of promise. He was a member of that for many years, working his way up the ranks doing a variety of jobs. Initially his specialty was stealth and thievery but ultimately he ended up also serving as a sort of international agent/ambassador. But he never played consistently well with systems or groups (being more concerned with what he wanted than what they wanted) and he eventually fell out of their favor for good. Getting away was an extreme ordeal but in the end he managed it. He then worked for no one, traveling often and generally laying low, until the Mob approached him.
It’s notable that the Organization sent him to live and work in Russia with their sister branch there for several years, and it was during this time that he had his most major falling-out with them and ended up leaving. Things happened there that he doesn’t like to talk about. The European branch has mostly fallen apart by this point in time (which Rook is known to have had a big hand in during the Russia ordeal, though specifics are hard to track down) but the Russian branch is still active (having kind of become more of its own thing by now).
Likes: music (classic rock especially, a few of his favorite groups being The Doors, The Animals, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd and Queen), knives (he collects them, and is usually carrying at least two), reading, travel, languages, fine culture, dark humor, tea, coffee, and pretty much anything tropical (though that’s a side of him that most people aren’t going to see often).
Dislikes: incompetence, most people, snow and ice, feeling exposed (hence clothes all the time), stairs, cold.
There are lock picks in his hat.
What this character shouldn't be depicted doing: Smoking in present-day time, flirting/being actually romantic with anyone in present-day time, blackout drunk (he does drink but never to excess in public), without clothes, wearing shorts

Haha thank you! He looks that way a lot, but he's especially not a fan of being seen without clothes xD

I dunno why I imagined him with Nick Valentine's voice and asking "What's the plan?"

I feel like he needs to wear a little festive party hat. With confetti falling around him. Brighten his image.

Good question! I find voices tricky to pinpoint and describe a lot of the time so this may not be the best explanation. But I've always imagined his as dry and maybe kind of smooth? (which might apply more to manner of speaking but I guess that still falls under voice). Not super deep so maybe close to mid-range? And typically a British accent of course.
Someone on another site mentioned Willem Dafoe as a possibly fitting voice, and while it's not 100% it seems like fairly close fit (from what I can remember anyway, haha).

His expressions are the best xD
Also I really like that pose of him in the backview. I can only imagine what he's yelling out that requires such intense gesturing.
And oh so mysterious he is in that coat~

Omygosh so much anatomy improvements for his bipedal form!
Looks fantastic and not too long in the torso/midsection like before.
Dem noice canine legs
I really like the new reference layout, especially with the new emotion poses. Feels balanced and nice to look at.
Rook has always been my favorite character or yours too <3

Thanks! Ah yes I'm so glad to have a replacement for that last one haha. That was from the time period of "what is anatomy" with bipedal/anthos.
Glad to hear! He's so much fun to work with

I really like this reference sheet. It is quiet unique and not boring as other one's. I have read through it and I really like Rook, just from how much thought you have put into him. Starting with scars and ending with the clothing. I love those coats
I love his legs, though. I'm not a fan of stereotypical anthro art where the characters could actually not stand on their feet.. but Rook looks absolutely wonderful and I just love the way you have drawn his entire legs. The knees, the paws, fantastico.

Thank you! I've been developing his history and such for quite a long time and I'm glad to finally get a good summary posted (and even more glad it's interesting!). And with this new set of reference sheets I'm working on I really want to show a lot of character through the poses. Ref sheets are so much more useful and fun to look at that way, I think
Glad the leg anatomy looks believable too! ^^

I usually can't stand this type of artwork due to the general unoriginality and all-around cringe, but this is different.
Though I'm no artist, I really like your style and think your designs look fantastic.
Other than the overly-abused 'edgy background' I can't really pick a fault with this.
Good show!

Thanks! ^^ I'm not really sure about "edgy" or it being overly abused here; I just added some faint paper texture for possibly increased visual interest. I was on the fence as to go with that or flat color actually; still not 100% decided.
