Illustration for the 7-th chapter of "Thunder Struck" byThis story is reeeeaally cute and I decided to make this picture as a surprise gift for the author.
SURPRISE!!
Unfortunately, "Thunder Struck" is not finished and has not been updated for a while, but I hope MerlosTheMad will fix that someday

I'll try to answer or just comment some of your points.
- "hard to work out what's going on with the background"
I think my main mistake here was that I've blurred background too early and to roughly. It concerns not only this table, but far cat as well.
- "weird furniture can be a bit of a gamble"
Actually it was just totally random sofa. I never payed a lot attention to furniture before and kinda was too lazy to grab some design references this time too 
- "partially-transparent cat-on-sofa-back"
This cat is another victim of the early background blur
And it's relaxing pose was not a mistake. There was a lot of animals (and in particular - cats) in this house, but the only one cat was aggressive to Sweetie. But I agree with you then you suggest it might looking towards the noise.

P.S. And there was no any dog in early versions

Eyes can be tricky, especially larger ones (which Sweetie certainly has), and it doesn't help that they tend to grab attention... As for the background stuff, it can often be easy to tell where an artist's passion is, which I personally find nice to see as it shows just how much of a difference a person's enthusiasm can make.

Now that I think about it, the thing that makes this look creepy is the shading on the top of the muzzle, or the transition between panel 4 and 5 in your development process. It lost depth, and makes her look like her nose is missing.
