Description AH...should have spent my day studying...but instead developed a brand new character! *hurrhurr*

This pretty lady isn't your ordinary lioness. In fact, she has nothing to do with Africa at all. She is an Asiatic Lion. (also known as a Gir Lion). animal.discovery.com/tv-shows/…

Her name is Anandi, which means "bestows pleasure" or "jovial/joyful". Which is how I see her. She is actually part of my "The Jungle Book" fan characters, as she is in the Gujarat area of India (Gir Forest to be exact).

Physical characteristics:

Like all Asiatic lions, she has the longitudinal/ventral fold on her belly (that line running across her abdomen at the bottom). If you draw her, that is probably the most important thing to remember. It distinguishes her from African lions.

She has wrinkles on top of her paws. Asiatic lions can have saggy baggy skin in certain places and I thought this would be a defining feature for her. She also has large paws as an adult

Notice the dramatic color change from cub to adult. Her cub colors would have helped her blend into the brushy surroundings, while her adult colors help her blend into the desert.

Her cub form has a rat tail...aka no tail tuft. But she gets a luxurious one as an adult.

Asiatic lions tend to be fuzzier in some places. They have elbow tufts (mainly the males, but sometimes females). So I gave her tufts I also gave her eyelashes like Scar to accentuate the fuzziness

Like most of my female lions, she is small in stature.

Her weight can fluctuate wildly....depending on the season. In the dry season, she can appear skeletal, like the rest of her pride. But she is strong and always bounces back.

Personality

She is a joy. A blessing to her pride. She was the only cub to be born that year due to a severe drought. In fact, her birth was a complete surprise as her mother didn't think she was still carrying the cub.

She is soft spoken and kind. Her voice is squeaky soft, almost sultry in a way (Marilyn Monroe-esque).

She is blessed in that the only hardship she knows is the changing seasons. Until she becomes an adult and her life begins to pull her in opposite directions. She is next in line as matriarch and her aging mother expects her daughter to take her place. But Anandi stumbles upon something (or make that...someone!) and suddenly she does not know what she wants anymore. This male...he is forbidden. His father is the pride's mortal enemy. But how can she ignore her heart's greatest desire? *so yes, she has a mate, so I won't be needing one developed for her. Kanya still needs one though! *

Please do not use this character or the lineart without my written permission. I don't mind sharing, I just prefer you ask first! Please do not make identical copies of this character or take this exact image and rename the character and call it your own...that would be STEALING. That's not nice!!

Her eyes!! They are such a pretty color!! I like the lighter color of her coat as a cub too. It's a really neat contrast!

Yes, I decided violet would be a nice color for eyes. I think the next character I create will have a smokey gray color, or something like that

Realllly love her design. <3 She's one of the prettiest and most uniquely-designed lionesses out there. And I'm such a sucker for nature colors. I also love how she darkens up with age! I really need to draw her sometime soon when I get the chance, she's really lovely caper. ;;Β

Oh my GOSH, this is amazing. I love her! She looks so soft... I feel like she would make the greatest pillow in all of the land.

No...I make the greatest pillow in the land...but not for long, once I get this weight off! Haha I couldn't resist. I personally love this girl, mainly because I deviated away from the traditional TLK format more than I ever have. I like her...dare I say it...more than Kanya's design I'm finally coming out of the TLK closet and finding my own uniqueness.Β

Cute! I just ran across the name of this breed of lion the other day when I was looking at some "new" type of lion which basically looks like a Barbary. Β

Yes, I saw something like that while researching Gir lions...can't remember what they are called tho...

Found it, they're a branch off of the Ethiopian lions. The DNA was so different from general Ethiopian lions that they consider it a new type.Β

Are they still alive or are they extinct like the Barbary?Β

I believe they are alive. the article was made back at the end of 2012, so it's barely been over a year. There were like... 8 males and 7 females and they're breeding them to make more. They're all in a zoo, which sadly, doesn't seem like the best place, but it's interesting nontheless www.mnn.com/earth-matters/anim…

Right??!! Haha. I've made a few, but never finished them or gave them an identity enough to upload them. Looking forward to seeing them.

I'm actually thinking this one is going to be a male (to capture that awesome mane!). I only have male tigers, no male lions!
