Description A commission for the very awesome

Uncle Iroh from the best cartoon on Nickelodeon, Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Rarely do we see Uncle Iroh in anything other than his upbeat, jovial mood, so I decided I wanted something a little more fierce and angry.

Linework done in Photoshop CS
Color work done in Corel Painter 9

*EDIT*
There's been some questions about the anatomy, so here's the sketchwork in bright colors over the colored picture to clear up questions. [link]

Iroh is one of those characters that is so inherently lovable. Weirdest part is that I even liked him in the... film.

Don't get me wrong, the vast majority of it was dreck. But it was also my first introduction to Avatar, and by the end of the movie I had two thoughts: "That was poorly-written s***, but I kinda liked Iroh". It's apparently impossible to screw him up too much.

And yes, I enjoy seeing his tough side as well as his jovial side. Because he's one of the few happy smiling old men who absolutely CAN defeat anyone in a fight.

Most people draw Iroh as friendly, laughing....or worried. It's good to be reminded that he has a tough side and that he can be a dangerous opponent. This picture summed that up very nicely, from Iroh's fierce expression to his slightly widened and battle-ready stance. The way the robe is billowing out doesn't look totally natural yet, but that's a very minor detail, only obvious on closer inspection.
You did a good job with the perspective though and I like the contrast of the pattern you put in the background!

Better yet, he's scolding his nephew for stabbing him in the back and helping Azula conquer Ba-Sing-Se.

I just love his face- wonderful job on the colors. It's true we don't see his more angry side very often.

awesome rendering.... but the left leg does seem a little weird. if i trace the path of the bone...it doesn't seem to be connected to the hipbone... but other than that.....cool!

check out the link I posted in the description to see how the anatomy works out. I worked from photo reference on the pose and had some 2nd, 3rd, and 4th opinions before I took it to the final. This was the result. I put the finished artwork underneath so you can see how it stacks up.

how so?

shadouryu In reply to Capnchef [2007-01-25 05:25:46 +0000 UTC]

I don't know maybe its the cloth but for some reason it looks disconnected from the body. I don't know I might be wrong.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Capnchef In reply to shadouryu [2007-01-25 05:57:12 +0000 UTC]

yeah, I think thats what it is too. The cloth kinda disrupts the flow and fluidity of his pose. But that doesn't bother me. I'm pretty happy with how this came out.
