This picture is directly from one of the scenes, where Tails and Amy meet after Sonic's party. Or to be exact, she checks in on him and they have another argument. Tails is mentally and emotionally exhausted by this point in the story, obsessed with winning the war against the Eggman/Robotnick, and his secretly held attitudes and opinions are hurting the relationships he has with some of his more carefree friends. Amy's unwavering Sonic obsession only further annoys him, because it isn't helping (the war effort) its pointless anyway (because of Sonic/Sally), and because it leads to his own rejection.
Note that the story is NOT Tails/Amy.

I was on the ball then with guess what would happen if Amy HADN'T been such a freakin Sonic fangirl; death and destruction so that one could know happiness. Man but it sucks to be have a destiny. Then again who knows; mebbe love might've been his inspiration to end the war faster so he might be able to enjoy life for a bit. SOmehow thought, I doubt it; I wouldn't bet on a clear cut happy ending to this story, cause nothing short of divine intervention seems like it allow such a thing. Evne that's not guaruntee, given how Mobius Divine (Quaasi-divine?) beings tend to act.
Merlin being the case in point; Damn tht was cold! Still I suppose there are worse creatures of ancient power to take advise from.... like En Sabah Nur.

Such a sad scene this was. How differant things might have been if maybe, just maybe, her Sonic obsession had begun to crumble?
Most likely Tailts might find some happiness in life.... which it turn probably prevents him going down the gray path, thus most likely enablinh Robotnik to achieve final victory. All so the Kitsune could k now the sweetest of emotions X )
Or perhaps, despite this, he would STILL not get any happiness... and probably end up even worse then what normally happened. Guy is simply SCREWED.

Speculatively, the most likely consequence of Tails being content and not aggressively pressing the fight later in the story (which he likely wouldn't have done if he wasn't obsessed with ending the war and proving himself) would have been everyone getting killed, and Robotnick winning. As the events of NWO prove, "worldly attachments" like a love life are something of a detriment. Hence why Merlin cruelly advises him to basically kill those he few he cared for (which of course Tails couldn't bear to contemplate).
Still, who knows? There could yet be a more traditional happy ending far in the future. lol.

COA _is_ sort of overwhelming in all the continuity it tries to encompass, I'll admit (games, comics, Sonic X). A lot of the references, though, are only ancillary to the plot. If you feel like it, though, you can easily just skip around to the parts with the characters you're interested in. If nothing else (and you have no interest in the comic verse) just treat it like an AU based partly on the games.

Can you tell me what all those abbreviations mean? COA is the name of the story i gather, what does it stand for. and do you mean Australia when you say AU?

Sure. Let's see, the most common abbreviations I tend to use for this are:
COA = "Cycle of Ages" - This is the "universe" where the story takes place.
COA:ACO = "Cycle of Ages: A Chosen One" - This is the first book of the planned trilogy. It is currently being rewritten.
COA:NWO = "Cycle of Ages: New World Order" - This is the second book of the planned trilogy. It is currently online and complete, though it'll be a bit odd going from the currently incomplete first book (since I'm rewriting it) to the finished second. Each one can be read stand alone, though.
AU = Alternate Universe. A common fanfiction term for any story that has a background very different from normal continuity. For example, if one were to write a story where the Sonic characters were in high school or something. This is a semi-common sort of AU-fanfic. If you are used to the SEGA games or Sonic X continuities, the comic one can seem like an AU (although it strictly isn't). Many verses have separate settings that are contradictory. An example of this is the Tenchi Muyo franchise, which had several different continuities... and the Gundam franchise, which has many iterations. These are not strictly AUs.

I plan to finish with the first book by the end of the month. Currently, Six of the planned ten chapters are up (the last chapter being about two times the normal length). Tails is the main character yes, but it has a very large supporting cast from the SEGA and comic continuities. I'm glad I could help clear things up!

Ooh i want to read it even more after you tell me tails is the main character. I love all the pictures of tails with weapons which make him look powerful. But the gore ones turn me off a bit. good work and good luck with re writing the story.

Thanks. It was a powerful and important scene I always intended to carry over, because it defines both those characters and the general situation that pervades 'The Cycle of Ages' so well. The saddest thing is that they both purposefully keep Sonic in the dark about it... and by this point, Tails keeps Sonic in the dark about a lot of things; trying to protect his hero's image of the world.

Tails is getting to be the Kings top man as I understand, with knowledge of things that even the princess is not privy to as I understand. Nice to finally see him getting out of Sonics shadow and getting things done hes own way.

One could also point to the clever King Max as someone developing a mole inside the potentially troublesome Freedom Fighters movement. He and Sally have had more than a few disagreements, so it only benefits him to start to develop a counterbalance to the powerful Sonic/Sally match up. Tails, meanwhile, has been keeping stuff not only from Sally and Sonic (though it isn't like Sonic cares much anyway), but the King as well. The perfect example of this is his rebuilding the Fiona android (who figures prominently in COA:NWO).
In COA, Tails has been out of Sonic's proverbial shadow for some time; problem is he thought it would make him happier, but it hasn't.

Tails agenda is somewhat unclear though - he seems to be taking the fight into his own hands and not just against Robotnik eventually taking on certain demigods. It looks like he wants peace but... at any price?... isn't he turning into a tyrant himself...

You could definitely say that he is. The original project that formed the basis for the "Cycle of Ages" (way back in 1999) was to turn Tails into an antagonist, whereby he helps to finally beat Robotnick but just ends up effectively replacing him. COA Tails isn't nearly that bad, but he's obviously started to venture into a gray area of subjective morality where the ends are becoming more important than the means.
