CAPTAIN-CAPSLOCK-PHD — 10 Villain Questions: Quentin Solondez by-nc-nd

Description Here is el Roacho's template filled out with my own hero/antagonist!

I originally planned for Corelle to find the sudden burst of violence 'sweet', but then thought that would give the impression that she and Quentin have something more than a business relationship, which they don't (just because she's a girl doesn't mean she's a love interest).

While the overall plot is serious, I want to incorporate a lot of pulpy campyness about old exploitation films that I love so much.

Oh, and I made a mistake here: it's supposed to be Megalodon, not Megalon. Megalon is the giant beetle that Godzilla fought with Jet Jaguar.

And now for the credits:

I get that Quentin is supposed to technically be a bad guy, but I'm having hard time seeing him as anything other than a dark shade of grey due to how he is genuinely trying to help people.

CAPTAIN-CAPSLOCK-PHD In reply to hillerj [2015-03-26 13:51:47 +0000 UTC]

I'm really glad to hear that.

imho Quentin's not a bad person at all. But then again, I don't see Magneto or several Batman villains as bad people either. They are listed as bad because.... that's where they're listed.

We haven't been introduced to the main antagonist in SE yet (we're still in vol. 1 ch. 3), but he bears the traits of a very typical hero. I noticed in a great deal of good vs bad fiction that the protagonists are very often evil - allowing huge casualties to happen for a comparatively petty cause, ignoring destruction of property, reacting to what someone else is doing rather than taking action to solve the problem themselves, refusing to have anything other than a strict black-and-white concept of morality, etc.

Quen IS grey (hence his hair - IT'S SYMBOLIC ME SO SMART!!), and according to a great deal of fiction, he must be evil. A big part of SE is playing with this concept and pointing out how strict idealism is actually more harmful than helpful.

I think I'm going to really enjoy seeing his interactions with the villain once they're introduced. It sounds like its definitely going to provide some interesting perspectives on morality.

I hope to deliver!

You can actually see him here, along with two other antagonists who haven't been properly identified as such yet:

He's the one near the middle in the red tie and yellow longsleeve who Viktor is glaring at.

I'd say he's special to have Viktor glaring at him, but Viktor seems to glare at anyone he meets.

Good point. Viktor tends to dislike most people and is grouchy even at people he does like. You need to be extra special for him to genuinely loathe you.

CAPTAIN-CAPSLOCK-PHD In reply to cellyangiechowski [2013-05-06 03:56:06 +0000 UTC]

Not really. We meet his mother at one point but he never returns to Mexico. He doesn't have a relationship with his family for various reasons and it just remains a "fact".

Well.. I guess they would if they bothered keeping up with him. They try hard to write him out of their lives so his actions don't even enter their radar.

I don't want to assume things, but since this is a Mexican family we're talking about, I'm guessing it's fairly large. The bigger families are, in my opinion and personal experience since I'm half-Mexican myself, more skilled at blocking out what they don't want to see than a smaller nuclear family where there's simply more spare time for dwelling. Am I making any sense?

CAPTAIN-CAPSLOCK-PHD In reply to Captainblackwing [2012-01-27 02:47:09 +0000 UTC]

It's fascinating to me how folks do not see Quentin as "evil". While I personally agree with you - he isn't "evil" in the literary sense. But if he were alive he would be universally hated for 'playing god', 'murdering the weak', 'being a corporate whore', and 'aggressively stealing' from other companies in the name of human evolution.

Is he all of those things? Yes.

But you and others don't hate him for it. It's because I've presented him as a likable human being - someone you can understand and relate to. Do you think Josef Mengele had friends? I don't know myself, but apparently he did.

Of course, there are plenty of tabloid reasons to hate him - he's a pathological liar, addicted to painkillers, enjoys his favorite Chinese 'massage parlor' on weekends, has an unhealthy obsession with death and mortality, acts like a filthy pervert to the Serdyuk sisters (they love it, though), and is the result of his mother's extramarital affair with a US soldier in Tijuana.

He's kinda fucked up, is what I'm saying.

Heh...House is an addict and everyone loves him...I'm interested in your character, because he seems to be creating these robots so that people who are disabled, sick, or dying, can live in them and that's an awesome idea!

CAPTAIN-CAPSLOCK-PHD In reply to Captainblackwing [2012-01-27 19:12:17 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

The robot idea started out as a complaint against Ghost in the Shell. I wanted to know more about the social significance of the option of having an artificial body. The movies and show completely ignore this idea, which is really the only thing I was interested in.

Captainblackwing In reply to CAPTAIN-CAPSLOCK-PHD [2012-01-27 19:37:20 +0000 UTC]

Yea, Ive seen the show, Ive always wondered about it...I mean I seen vague hints that it might have been considered weird to NOT have artificial enhancements but it never went anyway, it was kinda annoying.

CAPTAIN-CAPSLOCK-PHD In reply to Captainblackwing [2012-01-28 01:22:22 +0000 UTC]

What REALLY bothered me was Chobits. There was so much potential for discussing the social changes that would occur if physically perfect humanoid sex robots were just walking around as toys.
Would there be a huge drop in birth rate if people could just buy a perfect companion? Most of the robots are female - how would the feminists react? How would the average, non-supermodel woman feel?
Very frustrating.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Captainblackwing In reply to CAPTAIN-CAPSLOCK-PHD [2012-01-28 01:57:42 +0000 UTC]

Wow! Never heard of Chobits!..But jeez there should have been at least a little social outcry on that! I mean seriously...I mean I would outraged about that if it was real life

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CAPTAIN-CAPSLOCK-PHD In reply to Captainblackwing [2012-01-28 08:34:46 +0000 UTC]

I know!
It was SUCH a perfect set up to really explore and talk about the social consequences of sex-toy female computers. THAT'S interesting!
But no, it's just a silly high-school, magical girl romantic comedy.

That's about as insulting to the audience as a story can get.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Captainblackwing In reply to CAPTAIN-CAPSLOCK-PHD [2012-01-28 20:34:57 +0000 UTC]

Jeez...insult people's intelligence! I mean, there must be a dozen high school magic girl crap shows...why not be different?!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CAPTAIN-CAPSLOCK-PHD In reply to Captainblackwing [2012-01-29 04:04:45 +0000 UTC]

Clamp chose not to be different with Chobits and it ended up boing one of their most successful titles ever. People just can't get enough of magical girls (and the fembot, 'Chi' is impossibly retarded. She's like a Pokemon - she can only say her own name)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Captainblackwing In reply to CAPTAIN-CAPSLOCK-PHD [2012-01-29 04:46:27 +0000 UTC]

....She can only same her name?...Wow..that's kinda lame...At least Pokemon was cool...Jeez, this is why I lost interest in anime

CAPTAIN-CAPSLOCK-PHD In reply to Captainblackwing [2012-01-29 04:51:12 +0000 UTC]

me, too.
I know there are exceptions, just as there are exceptions to the US superhero tropes (Grant Morrison's Animal Man was amazing!).

Even with the exceptions, there are little, cultural things I don't like and that will never change. For example: I really love Cowboy Bebop. I think it's an outstanding show with great stories and characters. My biggest complaint? The characters are entirely apathetic towards one another. No one bonds, no one has conversations that aren't snarky or job-related. They aren't friends - we don't get to explore their psyches.

Of course, in anime when we DO get t explore psyches, it's Evangellion's "My daddy doesn't hug me waaaaaaahhhh..."

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Captainblackwing In reply to CAPTAIN-CAPSLOCK-PHD [2012-01-29 04:59:37 +0000 UTC]

Yea! That was annoying, I mean seriously no one in cowboy bebop seemed like they were friends
...I never like Evangellion....I LOVED Trigun, but I was so mad that there was a lack plot, and the way they ended it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CAPTAIN-CAPSLOCK-PHD In reply to Captainblackwing [2012-01-29 05:13:44 +0000 UTC]

I couldn't get into Trigun. I understand why people liked it, but the two tagalong female characters were "lol violence is funny if a girl does it". I saw them as ungrateful, unnecessary and deadweights that contribute absolutely nothing. This wouldn't be so bad if they didn't have 40% of the lines and screen time.

I'm sorry. I'm way too critical.

Captainblackwing In reply to CAPTAIN-CAPSLOCK-PHD [2012-01-29 05:22:09 +0000 UTC]

Lol, Hey, you're kinda right...That's one of the "plot problems" I had, like what was their point? Another the was why are ppl after Vash? Another? What the hell IS Vash? I think I just really liked Vash the stampede

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CAPTAIN-CAPSLOCK-PHD In reply to Captainblackwing [2012-01-29 05:26:37 +0000 UTC]

Vash himself is fascinating. I get the impression that he and... Knives was it? were aliens that took the form of whatever being they first saw.

I really, reeeeeeaaallly would have liked to have seen more interaction between the two. They hung out together for decades - there MUST have been more of a bond there than "we are brothers urhurr". What did they talk about? How did they interact? How did they effect one another's viewpoints? Did Vash prevent Knives from killing people during their travels? What about that space station? There seemed to be a lot of history there. I want to know more about THIS STUFF! >

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Captainblackwing In reply to CAPTAIN-CAPSLOCK-PHD [2012-01-29 05:33:17 +0000 UTC]

Well, the space station they lived, Knives killed everyone...Including this girl Vash was hyper attached to...They NEVER go into why knives Killed all these people...OR what they were doing before they faced each other...And the final battle was LAME...Alot lost chances to lengthen the storyline...*sigh*

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CAPTAIN-CAPSLOCK-PHD In reply to Captainblackwing [2012-01-29 06:45:08 +0000 UTC]

Even though I complain, I know how terribly difficult the writing process is. I know that focusing on what the author deems important and fascinating will mean sacrificing what some of the feels is 'untapped potential'.

Hell, there are aspects of my own story and characters that I could spend pages upon pages talking about, but it all has nothing to do with the plot. I've had people ask me things like "When are we going to see the robots?" "Are we ever going to see these people working?"

And you know what? They're right. I need to hear these complaints in order to keep me on track and tell a well-rounded and satisfying story.

Captainblackwing In reply to CAPTAIN-CAPSLOCK-PHD [2012-01-29 06:59:44 +0000 UTC]

That's a good point, in the end you have to focus on the main point of the plot.

I tried to make someone you can imagine meeting in real life, someone you would like and want to hang out with, but later be confused about how you should feel about him and his actions.
That and I'm just so goddamn tired of stock characters.

While I hate to admit that there are any large pop-culture influences in my work, there are here.

His personality is inspired by my two favorite characters from anything - Dr. Ian Malcolm from Jurassic Park and Col. Landa from Inglourious Basterds.

Meaning that he'll make you laugh, harmlessly flirt with your girlfriend and generally be the kind of person you want to hang out with if he likes you. However, if you get in his way or if you have something that he wants, he'll crush your ego into nothing, strip you of any dignity and still make it seem that you are the bad guy here, not him. And you believe it.

ieatkeyblades In reply to CAPTAIN-CAPSLOCK-PHD [2012-02-29 02:25:12 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I see why he's such a well-built character then. Landa is awesome, and so is Dr. Ian Malcom. Congrats on your character!
(By the way, I'll watch you so I can see more of him, if you don't mind ).
