Description I love Heavy Traffic, and Carole herself is such a strong positive woman character (realistic - she's human and makes mistakes) that I'm surprised she doesn't have a fandom.

Anyway, just practicing my style with other people's characters.

Having seen the History of Ralph Bakshi retrospective vids on youtube, I think you did the character superb justice.

I have to admit I think Carole is an interesting character with a lot of sass and takes no crap from anyone. She's not stereotypical as an African American woman. She actually does have a character, goals and what not.

She's not a good guy, in fact none of the characters in Heavy Traffic are on the level good vs. evil. They're all in the grey area where their sympathetic and relatable, but at the same time go into murder and crime like Ida, Angie, Shortie and even Michael and Carole well. Overall I was honestly surprised that I liked Heavy Traffic as much as I did.

Same here. I think the film is rough overall and could have done with more polishing and less drug use by the creators, but the end result is still a unique narrative experience.

Maybe the fact that it's so unpolished is the point?

Mine too!

If there was ever a character who could embody pure, unsaturated sass, it was Carole.

What a great take on this great character! Bakshi is my idol! While HT isn't my favorite movie from him, it's still incredibly entertaining. I dig the animation, Angelo is probably my favorite character in the movie, and the pinball symbolism is genius - life has a lot of twist and turns, but just keep putting in those quarters, and never give up.

I also wanted to point out that I wonder if Angelo is based on Bakshi's real father, since he's drawn so very differently than the rest of the cast.

I'm so glad!!!
It's hard to find another Bakshi fan. A lot of people can't get past his unusual art style (same with graphic noveist Howard Cruse, which sucks because his "Stuck Rubber Baby" is an autobiographical masterpiece) but the stories and messages are just unbelievable.

It's a shame - so many people are so fixated on Disney and DreamWorks and all that, but they can't take the time to appreciate an artist who had to achieve his dreams the hard way, with none of the money and support Walt Disney had. I do like Disney and all, but Bakshi films are all their own. The characters in them feel so raw and real.

It bothers me that people only look at the biggest, loudest, and most expensive displays of art.

They may be entertaining but I don't get a lot of mental nourishment from them.

What I want to see is a passion project. I wanna see something that consumed another human being to the point that they worked their asses off to show me their personal visions.

I don't know if it's possible to learn more about the human psyche and human condition than through that.

i immediately looked this up and watched a sequence of clips that focused on Snowflake, i did get to see a drop of Carole in it and was impressed by her, but the rest of the sample did make me go o_o;

Poor Snowflake.

People seem to think that she's supposed to be funny, but I see her as a painfully sad character who is hopelessly self-destructive.

Bakshi is a pretty nutty guy. I love it when "abnormal" people are compitant enough and dedicated enough to make an extended work of art. Sometimes it's terrifying insanity (Fletcher Hanks) or a look into a deep Autistic's creative mind (Henry Darger) or someone with an obsessive leg fetish and can't tell a narrative to save his fucking life, but throws an ungodly amount of energy into it (Brooke McEldowney).

Characters like Snowflake depress me, they might be endearing and funny to the average person, but to a gay guy like me it's the horrible consequence of a life surrounded by intolerance, you yearn for acceptance and love so much that you're willing to take any shit for it and demean yourself to such low levels. (Like that scene where that guy's making moves on her, finds out she's a tranny, and beats the shit outta her, all the while she's giggling and all like "I like it, do it some more) it's terrifying to me.

People wrongly assume that her giggling and saying that she enjoys the beating means that she ACTUALLY enjoys the beating, where anyone who knows the situation understands that she has probably been beaten since early childhood for being different, so the built-up PTSD has warped her mind. The fact that she breaks down crying once Shorty throws the bastard out shows what's really going on.

I wonder what kind of character i could make channeling this idea... Of course, i gotta be original about it and put alot of thought lest it be another whiny bitch in the club.

As in, describe someone you actually know/have met.

CAPTAIN-CAPSLOCK-PHD In reply to VikJones [2014-05-23 19:16:26 +0000 UTC]

It really, really is.

He keeps fucking up on basic animation concepts, like weight/gravity, keeping characters on model, timing in general getting movement and sound to sync up properly...

It's a nightmarish experience overall.

CAPTAIN-CAPSLOCK-PHD In reply to VikJones [2014-05-24 08:22:19 +0000 UTC]

Welllll... he WAS, but it was by those terrifying cheap 50's cartoons that ripped off Hanna Barbara (which were also painfully cheap), so it does like this:

Looney Tunes = Fine champagne
Hanna Barbara = Tap water
Bakshi's teachers = Stagnant puddle that will give you dysentery and brain parasites

He also worked on that insane Spiderman cartoon, sooooooo yeah.

Just saw MarzGurl do a review of this. Seems a decent flick, but I'm not a big Bakshi fan. Still at least with this one he did attempt some depth and achieved the goal with this flick.

Bakshi isn't for everyone, that's for sure. He's a tough cookie to tackle.

Heavy Traffic is undoubtedly his best work since there's so much autobiographical strife in the narrative.

But if you have a normal stomach and aren't a fan of purposeful ugliness, then steer clear. I've been tempered by much worse things and can handle it, but most can't and that's fine.

Mizutanitony In reply to CAPTAIN-CAPSLOCK-PHD [2014-05-24 00:58:49 +0000 UTC]

I'm not saying I can't. And truthfully I can relate to some of the problems in Heavy Traffic in regards to the main characters. I think it's more about how it's done more than anything. But we're shaped by experience and some relate to things that others can't quite grasp. I think the fact we''re discussing that is a testament to the work and that says a lot.
