Description
Haha! It's the Sixth Doctor and Peri, having WILD ADVENTURES IN TIME AND SPACE! in a very colourful, goofy, retro looking kinda way. I just had to draw Six...I love him and I don't even know quite why. Partly _because_ he's one of the least popular Doctors, and I've got that same "This is me, whether you like it or not!" kinda thing goin' on, myself. And partly because he just IS awesome, in a lot of ways. For one thing, I adore his fashion sense. It's so horrible that it passes _through_ that and back out into wonderful. And his odd combination of rude and elegant, loud and introspective, etc...Oh, and that's my real-life kitty Monty co-starring as his cat pin again. Because I can.
I also wanted to draw Peri in a non-insulting way, because she's another character that everybody goes around basically death-threatening, and yeah, she's annoying, but any time a character gets THAT much flack, it puts me _on_ their side! I'm an ornery little cuss like that...and I've met worse, anyway.
And I wanted to show a picture of the two of them getting along, but in a non-romantic way. A silly, light-hearted buddy picture was the mood that popped into my head...but don't even ask me why she's bunny-earsing him. THAT I have no idea. It's one of those "seemed like a good idea at 3:00 in the morning" type things.
The glowy background is like...random space...stuff...drawn in Paint and then blurred and so forth in Paint.net (Paint was used for the characters). and the transparent triangleish thingies are supposed to be like, delicate solar sails. Presumably they're under some kind of transparent dome over the outside deck of the ship.
Not sure why the ropes exactly...um...maybe they're on...a pirate ship. Yeah. A pirate ship of The Future! In SPACE!
Anyway, I love how this picture turned out, especially Six's expression, and I don't care who knows it.

Oh, I wouldn't say it's _annoying_. I've only read a bit of it (most of it being either for fandoms I'm not into or further ahead than I've gotten into the plotlines of things I do know, so it'd be spoilery for me) but at least you can freaking SPELL. And you don't seem to have Mary Sues/Gary Stus, but instead write normal characters. And can keep the canon ones _in_ character pretty competently.
BELIEVE me, even _one_ of those puts you head and shoulders above, ooh...at least 80% of Internet fanfic writers?

Well, either that or "Marty Stu" or somesuch. I'm not really sure which is the more widely used. Or you can use the generic "author/self-insert", which covers both genders.
At any rate, I have read--usually in MSTing form--_way_ too many fanfics that have...those, in them, in general. (shakes head) Wow, is there some BAD stuff out there...

Heh. I actually have done a fair few MSTings of bad fanfics myself...including one time when the author--whom I DID try to contact ahead of time, really--_found out about it_ years later. Thank the GODS it turned out that he himself thought that old story was stupid by then, and that my riffing was funny!
So, kill the authors with a forklift, no. Make fun of their stories to within an inch of the fanfics' lives, yes.

XD I've found Peri's Whoniverse universal twin. That one Gallifreyan chick from The Invasion of Time had me going "Is that Nicola Bryant? It can't be because she was probably not in drama school yet...but she has so many facial Perisms!" It was driving me nuts!

Haha! Yeah, I know who you mean. Rodan! We were totally cracking up at her name (_why_ is she named after a giant Tokyo-stomping rubber monster...?) And yeah, she has rather similar face bones/colouring. She _does_...!
~mpudifoot was making jokes about how, if this had been modern Who, _she_ would've been the Gallifreyan that Leela ended up with, instead of Andred. (snerk)
I love "The Invasion of Time", by the way. Great serial, one of my favourites.

You think of that when you hear her name, I think of WOTAN. XD
She also has similar facial mannerisms, which was starting to get on my nerves a little.
The Invasion of Time I think is my least favorite of all the ones set on Gallifrey. Maybe because of Castellan Kelner. Or the Sontarans.
I think there was a dark little corner of the Doctor's mind (who became the Valeyard?) that enjoyed playing the angry, power-hungry Doctor. The rest of the Doctor's mind, however, was deeply troubled.
There is nothing more useless than a lock with a voiceprint.

Go 6th Doctor!
You know, you're right--I think his blatant individualistic behaviour helped influence a generation!
Okay, so technically I was born after he left the show (not by his choice, mind you), but I've no idea which Doctor was my first as there's never been a time in my life since conception that hasn't had that Time Lord popping about.
Ironically, it was another Number Six that also had that stubborn individualism who also I watched all my life. Go individualist British TV characters involved with the number 6!
My philosophy has always been "You don't like the way I dress? You don't like the way I look? You don't like the way I talk, eat, think, or breathe? Well, tough, because this is me, and I refuse to let myself become one of the crowd." I even nearly got into a fight my junior year of high school about that. He was kind of bullying me about the fact that I dressed "wierd". He took my seat. And I stared him down all that lunch period, not sitting, not wavering, not backing down my anger or giving him what he wanted. (I did, however, scare my best friend half to death )
Enough about my 6th Doctorisms.
I don't understand why people loathe Peri so much. Or Adric, for that matter. If there were any companions I'd have dispensed with, it'd have been Turlough and Mel.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Captain-Chaotica In reply to darksporechild [2008-06-20 02:20:50 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, _I_ like Adric. And I'm willing to give Peri the benefit of the doubt (I've already seen/heard her be snarky to the Doctor, which is always a good sign. In fact, it's one of the things that is just about _necessary_ to be a Proper Companion). And yes, I knew about Six leaving the show not of his own volition. Shame, really--especially in this case, 'cos Colin was and is a total Whovian fanboy himself!
As for the _other_ Number Six...HA! Yes, I know about that! The Prisoner is another one of my favourite shows. (Incidentally, there's a Who serial that rather reminds me of it: The Macra Terror. A closed-in, fake little society where they pump in mind-control messages to you while you sleep and everybody has to be HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY and of course _all_ maps are only of the Vill-er, colony, Friend Citizen? Hmmm.) I saw that long before I became a Whovian, actually. In reruns, of course.
You want to know something funny? In one of my high school gym classes, there were numbers painted on the floor that we were supposed to sit on instead of chairs, for roll call. The teacher would call out our _numbers_ instead of our names, for some odd "quickness" reason or some such. True story.
Well, I got assigned to sit at the number 6 position (ha!) and every time she roll-called me as "Number Six?" I _always_ wanted to stand up and dramatically yell out: "I am NOT a number! I am a free woman!" (cracks up)
...but I restrained myself. Nobody else in the room would've got it.
I used to get made fun of for my clothes, too--usually in my case because I just randomly wore whatever instead of caring about trends, and still do--but there were a few instances of me showing up in definite _costumes_ to school/work. My all red-and-black tunic and tightsy thing (long shirt and leggings, with a belt) like something out of a fantasy videogame, my flat out _hippie_ outfit, with beads, paisley, bell-bottoms, long straight hair, a headband--the works! (it actually looks quite good on me) and my "New Romantic" look come to mind here. This would be the velvet and ruffles one, and why I already have stuff in my closet that Three wouldn't turn his nose up at, style-wise. If only it wasn't WAY the phrack too small for him.
Other of my more flamboyant sartorial choices include things like a long leather trench coat with huge '70s wing-lapels, a metallic silver blazer, and bright red Chinese silk shirt with froggings across the front, or wearing a '60s loud tie-dyed shirt with '80s stirrup pants, bright orange socks and white and black saddle shoes. Or my precious "motley" shirt, which I love to death. (Different colours on each side, mismatching sleeves, different colour pocket and back..) As you can see, I've pretty much _always_ had renegade Time Lord fashion sense on my own.
So, yeah. Know what you're talking about. Been there, done that, bought not only the T-shirt but the whole freaking summer wardrobe. Heh.

Peri wasn't that bad, if she hadn't complained so much I would have liked her better. She was great in Planet of Fire (I read the book but I can't bring myself to watch or read Caves of the Androzani, I hate regeneration episodes) but all she did was complain at Six, even after he proved he wouldn't try to throttle her again.
Peri moved up a notch since I saw Martha.

(snerk) Oh, so _you're_ the one with all the "Tegan Two" stuff...? (I tend to remember things/events/faces--not so much the NAMES they're attached to.)
The Stranger...hmm. Well, I first heard about that from Rich Morris, who does the "Ten Doctors" comic--he described it as basically being about the adventures of a toned-down Sixth Doctor with normal clothes and a non-whiny Peri with her own accent, and that got me curious.
Unfortunately I don't think there's any way you can find it legitimately today, so you will probably have to go with Bittorrent. If you are willing to do that, however, the torrent I found also had the OTHER BBV spin-off thingies, including PROBE, which is with Liz and she's one of my favourite Companions _ever_, "The Airzone Solution", a near-future sci-fi story on Earth that contains _four_ Doctor actors (Three, Five, Six and Seven) as well as Nicola Bryant again, "Downtime", which has Victoria, Sarah Jane, the Brig, and the Yeti--and other stuff. So it might be worth looking up that torrent, if you're interested. This whole set is just _full_ of people from Doctor Who...
The Stranger...well it starts off as "the Doctor in everything but name"--the second episode ESPECIALLY, as it has bits like somebody asking if "Miss Brown" (snerk)'s friend is a doctor? and she sort of...doesn't quite say yes, doesn't quite say no...also a couple of conversations in which the Stranger is _painfully_ Doctorly, hitting main elements of that character such as how he's too busy exploring to go around falling in love all the time, the fact that he's mysterious--and then he basically acts eccentric and happily weird at the the person he's talking to just because he can. He also gets a lovely philosophical line later on... (and wears a vaguely Doctor-in-general-like outfit, including a somewhat colourful sweater, flaming red loose flowy pants, and a long black wooly coat with big buttons and wideish lapels.)
"Miss Brown", meanwhile, sounds WAY less annoying when not doing that fake American accent. Heh. (And she makes fun of him sometimes! In rather the same way Sarah Jane might make fun of Four, actually...)
Should I mention that it starts off with him trying to _run off and be a hermit_...wait a minute, isn't that EXACTLY what Six wanted to do in "The Twin Dilemma"?!! In this version, he actually _did_...well, he TRIED it for a bit. We all know the Doctor (or his trans-dimensional soul-twin) can't actually stay uninvolved for very long... He's incorrigibly meddlesome, but we've always felt that his hearts were in the right places.
But later on, it turns out that The Stranger is yes, still an alien..but a very DIFFERENT kind from a Time Lord. Very, _very_ alien. And that he has a dark background. However, once he finds out he's terribly ashamed of it and is all like "No, I'm _not_ like that anymore!" and continues to go around (trying to) help instead of harm people, so he's _still_ a bit Doctor-like in that way...
I don't know the whole ending; I haven't seen it yet, and have been avoiding spoilers. But it's pretty good so far. It's low-budget, strangely intense because of that, and sometimes very, VERY fannish--but if you're in the right kind of mood, pretty good. I mean, they're independent films, so they've got that kind of weird artsiness feeling to them, for a start. Kind of wonky and offbeat.
Anyway. Sorry for the long babble here...I'll shut up now.

Oh, man...that coat. Yeah, it is quite "fun" to draw. This is actually my third attempt, if you count the "South Park" version of him in my "Ten Little Time Lords" picture. Heh. And I love the fact that he goes around wearing a cat decoration all the time...
And yeah...you can find image results of good ol' Six...heh. I _had_ kinda wondered if he was one of the inspirations for your "Doctor Who in general" costume on Silver, there. (I thought about it and realised only three Doctors had coats that even vaguely matched the shape/length of Silver's coat, in that picture--Four, Six and Ten.)
Thing is, it's not that he's an unpopular character by the standards of...characters in general. He's an unpopular Doctor among the fans, yes--gets pointed out as a favourite less often, less fanart/fic than some of the others, etc.
But he's still freakin' _Doctor Who_ ("Whether you like it or not!"). 'Nuff said.
