Description

Studying his spellbook in Castle Kalaman, preparing for the arrival of the flying citadel, a servant arrives in the wardroom, baring an old painting of Loren Soth, when he was still alive.  It's shown to Darrett Highwater, Solamnic Knight, whose eyebrows rise.

"Um...cousin?  I think you should see this painting.  I think it's you."

Alurian, seating at a table and reading by the light of a lantern on the table, looks up and frowns.  "Funny, I don't recall ever wearing armor, even for a sitting.  Father wanted me to be a knight.  I was a disappointment to him, and Grandpa Cilvar took me as his apprentice."

"My lords, I'm afraid you don't understand.  That's not Alurian, that's Lord Loren Soth, when he was alive.  It was painted 362 years ago, ere the fiery mountain fell on Istar."

The two cousins stared at each other.  Shalindra, Alurian's girlfriend and ranger, stared at it.  "The resemblance is uncanny!"

"I guess this explains why Soth doesn't want to kill me," Alurian said.  "'Tis obvious that I'm descended from his half-brother, Adam Kaladon, for which this castle and city are named."

"Alurian, that may well be the only advantage we have."
