Description Been a long time between drinks astrophotography wise for me this year. Work has been all consuming and coupled with the very wet weather lately I was desperate to get out a few nights ago when it was clear. No plan. No killer location. Just went for a drive and gazed up.

20 image panorama. Canon 6D, 24mm, F/2, ISO 6400, 15 seconds exposures

So glad that you were able to get out there and be happy! I tried some astrophotography with bokayeh when we were in the American southwest. Unfortunately there was a full moon, but there were 4 planets out in the night sky. We tried for the Milky Way over Cedar Breaks Canyon. We need to work on getting the foreground in focus. thanks for sharing!

Hi there, Greg, sorry it took me so long to get back to you, but it's been just way too busy for me to do much here on DA. Here's the link, the photo needs to be more in focus, obviously, and I think for 5 seconds less exposure as the stars are starting to move here (hand it set for 30 seconds). At least that's what I would try next time. But getting that focus, and keeping it--that is so hard!

Hi Julie,
Thanks for sending me the picture.  Yes, with the moon being so bright it really does wash out the stars a lot so you do not get the full impact of the Milky Way.  Nice shot though.  Looking at the image, I actually think it is not really a focus issue.  The stars are small bows which to me looks like the camera moved slightly during the exposure.  If it was just a slightly too long exposure the short star trails should be straight lines, not curves.  This would explain the blurry foreground too.  Was there a lot of wind at the time?  Looking at how "tight" the lines are in the stars your focus actually looks like it was pretty good, but I suspect the camera was not as stable as it should have been on the tripod.  Next time try to make sure that your tripod is really well positioned so that it does not flop around.  If it is a fairly flimsy tripod I recommend that you do not extend it much at all and more shoot from ground level, or you can hang a bag full off rocks from the center column to add weight to it to make it more stable.  Also make sure that you do not touch the camera or tripod in anyway during the exposures.  Set a 2 or 10 second delay for the shutter so that the camera has time to stop vibrating after you press the shutter button.  Hope this helps and best of luck with your next try.  Let me know how you go.
Kind Regards
Greg

Thanks Greg, that's most encouraging and great advice. The biggest drawback of my camera is that it doesn't have a set-up for a remote. I did set the timer though, and couldn't change it so it had a 30 second shutter delay, then a 30 second shot. I would probably try 25 seconds on the shutter the next time around. Was it windy? Yes, it was a bit but not a gale, and it was quite chilly. But mostly there were tons of people around. I had my new tripod which is much more stable than my last one, and we were quite constrained by the big log safety fence. In order to get any of the canyon in, we had to either shoot above the fence or between the logs from quite low down. I opted for above, my daughter tried in between, and I got the best (lucky) shot. Great tips on the tripod stability though, will try that the next time, thanks! I really appreciate the advice and encouragement. Will let you know the next time I have ago!
