The Helix Nebula (NGC 7293) is a large planetary nebula in Aquarius. It is also sometimes referred to as "The Eye Of God." A planetary nebula is formed when a star similar in size to our own, begins shedding it's outer layers at the end of it's life. The star will usually eventually become a white dwarf.

The Helix Nebula truly is large in the night sky. In fact, its angular diameter is only 30% smaller than our moon.
You've done great work. Β

Thank you so much Yes, I was quite surprised how big it came up on the back of the camera when I first imaged it.

I love your work I'm hoping to get to try a bit of shooting through a telescope soon (or fairly so) myself, if all goes well with weather and such; I've always wanted to. Do you have any tips I might could use?

So its kind of dying out like a comet? Also, why does it start shedding?

Beautiful shot!!

Thank you very much I'm by no means an astronomer, but as I understand it, a star will expand at the end of it's life to become a red giant (our sun will eventually expand and swallow up the Earth), when it becomes too big it is unable to hold onto it's outer layers and the solar winds start ejecting the material into deep space.

Are you a creationist or evolutionist or what are you other then those two?
I'm a creationist and I believe that God will destroy everything with fire just like he said he would.

With the ejecting the material into deep space, With the sun doing that so much then the sun will not be there anymore, therefore how can it swallow up the earth? I can see the heat from the newly formed red giant boil up the water and atmosphere, but I just don't see it eating the earth.

I don't have much of an opinion either way. The expanding sun is of course just a theory by scientists based on observations of other stars. No one knows exactly what will happen at the end, but I come across this theory quite a bit in what I read. That at the end of a stars life they expand in size. Weather or not it expands enough to reach where the earth is is pure speculation. Some say it wont reach the earth, others say it could expand enough to even reach Mars. I don't want to get into a debate about it. I just like to photograph what is out there in space, I don't pretend to know everything about what I photograph but I like to at least get a bit of background information on what it is, and that is the most common explanation I have come across.

Ok, then

I think it is a cool theory but of course know one really knows what will happen in the end like you said.

Well, thanks for explaining that for me and thanks for the conversation.

Awesome shot O_O I love the universe, it's so mysterious, there is so little known about it... Too bad we'll collide with the Andromeda galaxy someday (although our solar system has been destroyed for a looong time by then (sorry for my terrible English >.< )) xD

My daughter was browsing the internet, looking for wallpapers that include the sky and stars. So I called her in and showed her your work. She loves it. This is amazing work and the clarity of the nebula couldn't be better. Well done.

I would die to see something like this with my own eyes...of course the radiation would probably kill me in an instant...
