Description
Right…so after reading ~KaliPhantom ’s Spirit Quintology and watching “Fright Before Christmas,” I was bitten by the Ghost Writer bug, and had to start drawing him. I thought he deserved an actual background, so here he is in his library with his books and his lovely shimmery Quantum Keyboard, looking suave and showing off those wonderful sharp teeth of his. *shivers* Oooohh. That guy can write me into his book anytime. *laughs* Come on—scruffy hair, pointed ears, pointed teeth… Plus, he glows. Seriously. I want a guy who glows. XD (The pose? I don't know why, but I always found the gesture of pushing one's glasses up attractive. I'm weird like that.)Speaking of glows, the good news is, I learned how to do outer edge glowy effects for this one. Getting Writer’s face down was, oddly enough, both difficult and easy. It’s pretty variable in the show, and I really like the way I did him, but I wonder if I made his proportions more realistic than they ought to be. Still happy with it though. More realism never hurt anyone.
I know, I know, I should be working on my other projects...But once I find something new to obsess over it sort of starts taking over everything else...e-heh...
Tools Used: MS Paint, Photoshop 5, way too much time. No tablet for this one, just a mouse.
Musical Inspiration: "Paperback Writer” by the Beatles.

He's so devious and also so cute. I'm so peeved he only got featured in one episode, a holiday special at that. Those are NEVER remembered as well as the non-holiday themed special episodes of a show.

Yeah xD im one of those girls, oddly enough, my friends say i should date him if he was real because i look like him, odd ruffled hair, awsome long coat, scarf, glass, the whole jig, the only thing missing is being a ghost, sideburns, and whatever you wanna call his beard thingie xD

I draw with pencil, but then I scan it and use the curve and fill tools in MS Paint to do the rest. So I guess it's technically not drawing with the mouse, but linearting that way is harder than doing it with a tablet, that's for sure.

This is an AMAZING piece of work! You have pretty much made go into Fangirl!Isca mode.
Ghostwriter is one of my favorite DP characters (I dont say "villian" on the grounds he only wanted to teach a lesson and all the other ghosts are jealous of his smarts/hotness)
You did this with a MOUSE! *faints* I only have a mouse myself and I could never get something like this.

I agree, he's not a villain, despite his being 'really quite wicked' and killing a bunch of deer. (I don't know how that works.)
The curve tool on MS Paint makes this kind of stuff much easier to do with a mouse than it seems--all clicking, no clicking and dragging required! You should try it out if you get the chance.

So you call him Devan? So far I've seen that, as well as Gregory, Geoffrey, and John. As for myself, I call him Clive, like C.S. Lewis, so that he can hate his first name and go by his last name, Ryder.
*laughs* I may draw him on the keyboard at some point, in a productive sense (?), but not without clothes! *protective* Well, maybe without pants at some point. But only because ghosts' pants tend to vanish when they turn their legs into tails.

Oh and now there's the other reason... Keats!... riiight now I remember... I always thought Keats reminds me to GW so when we started the rpg we thought let's make him Irish...

Eeheehee… I do like that pose. Writer looks a bit off model, but I can't place where or how, really, except possibly around the shoulders/upper arms somewhere… Doesn't matter too much, since the pushing up of his glasses is definitely an attractive pose for him. (And I'm glad you don't like him just for the personality. Makes me feel better about … appreciating his character design.
)
You've done an amazing, fantastic job of the background, too. I was expecting you to say in your notes that you'd modified a screencap, but no, no, you drew that. Muchly impressed.

Trust me, it's annoying me, probably a whole lot more than you. XD I've been continuing to study his design and making a list of little details that might help, since I really like to try to draw characters accurately rather than in "my" style. It's hard to compromise, though, sometimes; take for instance the pupils. They ought to be smaller, technically--but--on the other hand, larger pupils make things (?) look 'cuter.'
You know, I think I might have made up that part of his coat. I have no idea where I got that idea...but I like it. XD Dunno why.
My goodness, that makes us sound so shallow. XD But you're right. It's nice that he's one of the more human ghosts; even his color is almost correct. (I imagine he was a pale human, too). Makes the little quirks stand out more. Despite that, though, I think I may be one of the few fans who would say that she wouldn't molest him if he suddenly appeared in front of me. I'd probably just ask him to talk. A lot. Because he also has a very smexy voice. And I'd sit there and stare at him while I listened, and try to string some intelligent sentences together.
Meh, the background was just a bunch of polygons. Tedious but not really all that difficult. His Quantum Keyboard was much harder though, smply because they change its color design every five minutes!!! So I simply picked the one I liked best.
Glad you liked!

Heh, true enough. I know the feeling. And we enter the accuracy vs. creativity debate. I'm torn between the two, admiring the people who can do the show's style and admiring the people who can convey the character in their own style, because both show more effort than I'm willing to put forward, and more artistic ability than I have. I hope you're more satisfied with your next version of him.
Heh, I guess so, but for me at least, it's always personality first, looks second. I'm not the type to molest him either, though I think he's the only character I've ever truly fangirled about. Like you, I'd just sit him down and talk, and probably get into a rousing conversation. I'm not intimidated by intelligence or knowledge, most of the time.
Okay. Fine. Disabuse me of my belief that having lots of things in a background makes it difficult. Heh, you know, I never really noticed that, but it's true, isn't it? That happens a lot with props and backgrounds in the show. The animators are not consistent.

Caretaker-of-Myth In reply to KaliPhantom [2008-06-12 19:33:54 +0000 UTC]
I do try to usually go for the show's style, mainly because I don't really consider myself to have my own style. As I said, to me, it's the most "accurate" style I can get, and it reminds me the most of the character. The problem then is making it perfect. But sometimes there are people whose renditions in other styles are believable. Because I can't do that, I consider it even harder, if only on a personal level. Kalei-chan's work comes to mind. 👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Agreed; personality must come first. That makes me wonder again about women liking villain-type characters. You can't really like them for their personality...so...potential personality? XD
I always laugh when I see teenage girls proclaiming over the Internet, "Don't touch ___
I admire your consistency--I desperately, desperately wish I were that consistent. It'd make my gallery make a lot more sense, that's for sure. I'll grudgingly admit that according to the strange rules of the fangirl world, it also makes your "claim" to him much more legit.
How about being intimidated by the fact that you're in an impossible situation? I think that's what would get to me, and is the main reason I wouldn't be able to hold my own, with the result that everyone would get bored and leave. XD Either that, or I'd get into a debate over a point we disagreed on. Even so, I doubt he'd be willing to talk for long before returning to his work anyway.
Happy to do so! And yeah, the backgrounds can be weird. It's amusing how often they have people just standing there holding the same expressions and poses with the hope that the viewer will always be looking at the speaking character in the foreground.
KaliPhantom In reply to Caretaker-of-Myth [2008-06-12 21:26:31 +0000 UTC]
That's fair. After all, my style seems to have stagnated when I was eleven or so. I suppose BH style is easier than coming up with or translating a character into a different one, but … still more ability than I have. My talent is for words.
Yeah, potential personality. Going back to the bad boy-redemption aspect.
I laugh and groan, then decide that they're really not harming anyone, will grow out of it, and look back and be absolutely mortified that they ever acted that way. I think a number of those girls don't really understand that Insert Character's Name Here is fictional, either, and that there really is no way they'll ever meet them. (This is probably why street theatre in places like Disneyland is so popular.) I think they'd probably have a decent chance at getting close to their favourite character, were that possible, but staying close to that character would be a completely different matter. After all, pretty much every character that gets rabid fangirls is armed or a specialist in physical combat.
And you know, I haven't seen a self-insert either, though there may have been a canon Sue, I can't remember. I'm going to assume that's because Writer attracts sane and mature fangirls who know how to write.
Oh, don't get me wrong. I'm a fan of plenty of other characters (Vlad and Lancer, and from other fandoms, Hiro Nakamora, Dean Winchester, Kaylee Frye, Wash, the Doctor, Sam Vimes, Crowley, Merry, Pippin…. I just express my fanishness by finding art, reading fic, and learning random facts, as the mood strikes me. Writer's the only character I've ever found truly attractive, and that's because he matches so well with my pre-existing concept of The Perfect Guy.
That I could see, but I think if I was ever in the situation, the rules of the universe would be such that I'd feel fairly normal, so… I also know I drop my guard more around kindred spirits and creative personalities, so know I'd be more open to chatting rather than just listening. 'Course, the real test would be if that actually happened. (Also, don't mind debating.)
Viewers like me, you mean? On a tangential note, "watermelon" is apparently the word to mouth if you're an extra or chorus member who's supposed to look like they're talking. I know the strangest things.

Caretaker-of-Myth In reply to KaliPhantom [2008-06-14 22:07:24 +0000 UTC]
I think my style stagnated around that time too…For a long time after I began to draw again, I was terrible at anatomy. You can see examples of that even in the older stuff in my gallery, drawn just a year ago or less! Even now, it’s still sort of hit or miss with me. I draw very geometrically, memorizing patterns and rules of distance that help. I think it makes drawing much more cut-and-dried than writing, actually. Geometry helps you know what ought to be in a place, in a way that can’t really exist for writers—at least in terms of body proportion.
Some women see very far in some cases. XD
True enough. Maybe an idea of Heaven factors in there? The Great Unknowable? And now I’m going to try thinking of characters with rabid fangirl followings who are not armed or skilled in physical combat. Frodo comes to mind… You have to admit, aside from carrying that Ring, he doesn’t do much in the way of physical work. Also, you have just put into my mind the thought of numerous lust objects (I wince at the term) sending hordes of fangirls flying. It’s amusing.
I love Disneyland. ^_^ Or to be more specific, Disney World and the parks associated with Orlando, Florida. I’ve been there quite a few times, and it was always so much fun. I found I did enjoy Epcot much more as I grew older, though.
I think you might be assuming too much about the type of fangirls Writer attracts…though you’re right in that I haven’t seen any such fics. *points to comments* Is being satisfied with a clothed Writer a prereq for those labels?
Yes, Hiro! The Doctor! Merry! Pippin! I…don’t know who the others are, save Dean, but I have to agree with those choices. If I were to make a list, it’d be a lot less mature—I started to like certain characters at a very young age—and it would have Sam in it, and Snape, Jack Skellington, evUnknown-person:’s Climber, Kakashi, Rock Lee…a few others from shows you’ve probably never heard of…and Schmendrick the magician, who, it strikes me, would probably get along rather well with Writer. Once I start to like a character, I tend to start finding them attractive too, but come to think of it, I’ve never actually sat down and decided which one matches my concept of “the perfect guy.” Maybe I…um…haven’t made up my mind yet? Anyway, whenever I get a new one I always comb the ‘net for sources. Sadly GW’s are very few and therefore dry up rather fast…
Naah. I just got lucky with this one; it’s all straight lines and most of those are rectangles. It’s when you add the circles and diagonals that it gets harder. And that bit about the watermelon is cool; I can see that. Now I’ve been mouthing it all night.

I am good with geometry, but horrendous at lengths and straight lines. I really don't want to take the time to map out everything about a sketch with a ruler, compass, and probably a protractor, since that strikes me as being somehow too analytical to truly be "art" and I'm not patient enough. I've tried the memorization thing, for basic proportions and that doesn't seem to have helped much either. Thankfully, I don't care that much about how my drawings look, so none of that bothers me.
But Frodo has a sword for most of LOTR. He may not be particularly good with it, but it's there. He's armed.
I enjoy Disneyland. Haven't been there in ages though, and would really like to go back. I haven't been to the "new" park there. And Disneyworld is also on my list of places to visit someday. I don't care how cheesy Epcot would be for a twenty-something, I want to see it! I'd imagine having greater world knowledge would be good there, to a point, and then you'd start seeing how dumbed down much of it is for the kiddies.
I'm only assuming things about one type of fangirl. Not all of them, and I know there are rabid Writer fans out there. But … I've never seen a rabid Writer fic. In the writing community, it's pretty much standard that people who write Writer see him in a similar way to how I (we) do.
Mkay, yeah. Kaylee and Wash are both from Firefly, Sam Vimes is from the Discworld novels, and Crowley is from Good Omens. All completely awesome characters who I could watch/read again and again. I think Xander and Spike from Buffy would also be in there, though I haven't seen much of the show. Oh yes, and Jack Sparrow. I don't know anyone in your list except for Sam, Snape, and Skellington.
I didn't turn fangirl until about four or five years ago, about the time I started college. I missed out on the immature fan phase, luckily. I liked characters before then, but never approached them fannishly.
My "perfect guy concept" is the product of sitting down and thinking about who I've crushed on irl and who I like in shows. I go for smart, witty, kind personalities, and thin, nerdy bodies.
