Description When I first saw that there were Phantom Phan clubs here on DA I assumed that the first thing I'd turn in would be something with the Phantom in it, not Christine, but I kept putting it off for commissions and convention work... but this just sort of came out of left field... I just stayed up the whole night making it because I couldn't sleep and I was feeling that really HEAVY sort of feeling again that I've been feeling alot lately.. so instead of just wasting a bunch of time crying and wallowing in tortured thoughts I drew this instead.

This part of the story doesn't seem to be touched on as much by phans... the Phantom "phan"dom in itself seems to derive mainly from the mystery and the seduction of the Phantom himself, or those who relate to the love triangle because they've seen or dealt with a similar situation in there lifetime... but for me there is an aspect of the story that I relate to that has made me a die hard fan of Gaston's book, and Lloyd Webbers song that sums up the feelings of Christine (more thoroughly explained in the book) about her difficulties of letting go of her past. I've had this problem myself for a very long time, and lately it's depressing me that I am only 2 years away from being a quarter of a century old and it still lingers. They say time heals all wounds but Webber's song "Wishing you were somehow here again" pretty much sums up why I haven't been able to shake my depression lately.

I cried like a sissy the first time I went to the new version of the movie too. Em did a beautiful job with the role.

Now, could be just me and my usual craziness, or it could be the skirt she's wearing, but her thighs seem a bit big... Like, there's her itty-bitty waist, and then a set of huge thighs. It's probably just the skirt.

CaribbeanBlue In reply to NightWarriorLimited [2005-05-11 03:57:18 +0000 UTC]

It's the style of the skirt.. yaeh.. theres supposed to be a petticoat underneath.. and usually I take your cirtiques into consideration but I looked at several reference pics from a fashion through the ages book and I'm pretty sure I got it down, cause Christine was supposed to be very pale thin and always out in space because she was just sort of walking around in a daze grieved about her father but still wearing alot of the opera style of dresses that helped fill out girls cause hourglass figuires were the hot look back then.

It's a shame how many phans hate Christine for her choice. Though I could sit here and rant on why she did it, I'll let that go so I can say just how moving this is. I've been going through some rough things lately myself and seeing this only made me think of my own father (who, poor dear, has failing health) and I shed a little tear. The colors are well chosen since they are the colors of mourning (though a bit of indigo could've been added for fun ) and it only strengthens the message of this piece and the lost expression on Christine's face. Wonderful job and I hope you'll feel better soon.

CaribbeanBlue In reply to saraleaart [2005-05-11 04:08:52 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. I'm glad you understand..

I often think Christines choice had little to do with Phantoms obsessive personality, or even his murderous nature, because she seemed to understand that it was the fault of society and he did some of the things he did because it was the only way he knew how.. I think it had to do more with that the Phantom had taken it upon himself to try to help her solve her grief by pretending to or tryihng to replace her father figuire.. and she knew that she had to move on from her past, not try to replace her father in that unhealthy manner... but I'm sure theres others that would debate with me on that...

I'd love to hear what you think..

saraleaart In reply to CaribbeanBlue [2005-05-11 20:28:28 +0000 UTC]

That's actually similar to what I believe. My take is since her Father died when she was little, she really never grew up mentally. Her grief kept her holding on to the concept that she was a lost little girl who was alone in the world. When her Angel of Music came, she immediately thought it was her Father who had come back to keep his promise. When she found out Erik lied, though, I think that really hurt her but she still wasn't going to let go of the fact he'd been replacing her Father ever since he revealed himself as the Angel to her. Raoul showing up only confused her because she was then torn between a man who had been acting as a father figure and someone she knew could care for her and comfort her like one. Raoul had been a childhood friend and she knew she could trust him since Erik had lied.

Not saying the girl had the mentality of a ten year old, but she knew where she was, perhaps, safer and who could bring her more happiness in reliving her childhood days. Though of course it's only my opinion.

I wasn't impressed with him vocally at first.. I believe he's Gerard Butler?

But t hen the second time around I went and watched the movie I stopped thinking of how he was nothing like Michael Crawford, (who you get used to as THE Phantom if you've had the CD for awhile) and realized Gerard is trying to be more like The Phantom actually would be. He shouts some of his lyrics which was abrasive at first.. but then I started thinking.. he WOULD be like that.. Erik was very demanding.. and not supposed to be as seducttive as Lloydd Webbers musical made him out to be when it first appeared on broadway.. but still powerful and somewhat controlling.. so commend Mr.Butler for (wether he did it intentionally or not) sticking more to book Phantoms attitude but still having musical Phantoms charm. It was a good mix but took some getting used to.

ToraSetsuna In reply to CaribbeanBlue [2005-05-11 20:16:52 +0000 UTC]

indeed. but i'm not really able to agree or disagree do to the fact that i haven't gotten to read the book yet and i haven't seen the broadway prodution sadly. i missed it last time it was in Birmingham and i'm afraid i'm not going to get the chance to see it. not unless someone has the broadway version on tape or something. so at this time all i have to go on is the film production of The Phantom. of course i like Gerard Butler for his performance but i really like him for his looks. even if half his face was covered the whole time. whether by the mask of the make-up, i still think he's pretty.

Much MUCH better to get your pain/sorrow/whatever out through a pencil in your hand rather than salty tears down your face. I always draw best when I'm depressed I find... I love the intracacy in all of it. You must have so much patience! All your work is so carefully done and the lines and the cloth-folds and the expressions. Yea, you're such a good artist! Never read, watched, or whatever else you can do to "The Phantom of the Opera" though, so this is a pure art-appreication comment! I probably dont get the same emotional responce as someone who knows who it is and what's going on but she's still beautiful and you convey a feeling and an idea so very well.

Oh -my- that's lovely.

I know what you mean about the phandom. A lot of the fic (phic, whatever) writers, and a lot of the artists just slide -right- up to Erik and go squeak and squeal and completely forget a good 3/4ths of the rest of the book/musical/whatever they're going by. At least poor Christine is in most of it. Do you ever see La Sorelli in anything? *headshake*

..um.

anyway.

Hey,that's not -that- old. ^_- I've got close friends older'n that, and they still act like teens. ...well. one of them acts like a 3 yr old,but that's because he's a guy. ...and they all act like that around 30.

I hope you get to feeling better soon.

CaribbeanBlue In reply to Caylin [2005-05-11 04:23:53 +0000 UTC]

I have a PBS taped stage production of Phantom I love the best out of all the diff. versions I have just cause it actually includes our dear "Daroga" from the book. It always irritates me that he has such a large role in the book and everyone just sort of skips over him, even though he's an essential character to learning more about Eriks youth. At least in the movie they added a bit more of book reference using Madame Giry in place of alot of things that was actually our good detectives memories.

So I feel ya man. I feel ya. Right back with you. Original book "phans" in the hiz-ouse yo.

and I wasn't upset over how old I am, as much as how much time has gone by and I am still clinging on to memories that I thought I'd have healed from by now.

Caylin In reply to CaribbeanBlue [2005-05-11 05:36:13 +0000 UTC]

Ever read Phantom by Susan Kay by any chance? Quite a lovely book, and it intertwines nicely with the Weber musical -and- Leroux's book. It's very heavy on the Daroga, and his relationship (*shudders* not THAT kind) with Erik (erp. I just gave myself a horrible, horrible smut fic to write. the kind of nightmares. *twitches*).

I thought the movie did a very decent job of throwing Madame Giry in place of the Daroga. She can't live up to his place entirely,of course, and they had to brutally bastardize Erik's past,but... well. I always think of Weber's musical as Weber's version of Phantom, with occasional additions from the original book. *thwaps Weber gently*

Really. If he never visits Persia, where the heck did he learn to lasso people around the throat,eh? Unless that theatre is a lot more cut-throat than even Broadway is.

Yes. I'll shut up about Phantom now. >< because if I don't,I'll never shut up. ^^'

I'm sorry about the memories. Best thing I can say -there- is that,if nothing else, you're somewhat in control of them, and you can force them back and away for a while to rest if they get to be too much? And hey, noone ever fully heals from anything. I mean. There's probably grandmothers that still pout somewhere deep down because they didn't get that lollipop when they were 5.

...okay. so maybe that's a hair extreme, but you know what I mean?

like.. a hundred times over since It was first introduced to me when I was like... 13 I think..

The book is beautiful.. but very sad at certain points.. I love it though, because Gaston Leroux really seems to understand the human heart, the horrors that can occur from enforcing sociatal roles on people, and the sadness and fondness.. the bittersweet feelings a person can get from memories.. nostalgia.. that sort of thing.. it really delves into every facet of the meaning of the word love.. from family love, to childhood sweethearts, to obsession, to the sort of love that is so deep that you have to learn to let them go even if it kills you inside, because that is what will make the other person you love happy.

I think hte movie just came out on DVD right? I'm so going to go pick it up if so.

Supremely cool coloration. Her right arm looks a tiny bit off, but beyond that it's superb. I like the halo you put around the moon, really helps with the wintry night effect. I love her costume design, and her hair is wonderful.

CaribbeanBlue In reply to Professor-Lysander [2005-05-10 16:37:13 +0000 UTC]

yeah.. ohh.. I'm glad you notice the costume.. I was sketching her out and when it came to inking I started having this inner struggle.. I adore Sarah Brightmans original costume design when htey first put it on Broadway because it's BLUE and soooo something Miss Celeste (me-ness) would wear, but I also felt the darker "mourning" garment they made for the movie Christine was much more appropriate in a way, because she was going to visit her fathers grave.. so I tried kind of mixing them both with a bit of gray as well.. I think midnight blue, black, and grey make for a fabulous color contrast on a garment, and I do'nt understand why more designers don't use that combo because it really makes the outfit stand out... I've only ever seen Mana take full advantage of it and a few other theatre designers..

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Professor-Lysander In reply to CaribbeanBlue [2005-05-11 03:10:53 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, the costumes in the movie were pretty sumptuous (naturally, since the director was a former costume-designer, and has the over-the-top Vegas mentality), but I think your take on Christine mourning dress works better. I probably should watch the movie again to properly pass judgment, but I have very little desire to see it ever again.

Have you seen the movie 'House of Flying Daggers' yet? The costuming in that film is inspiring.
