Description This is an entry for ClainDeLune’s “Feel the Future” contest. We were supposed to design a character with a “future” theme.

My character is Millicent Vires, a future descendant of my character Benign Vires [link] She’s part hedgehog and part cat, possibly with something else mixed in. She’s about twelve or thirteen years old and is the only child of wealthy parents who spoil her with luxurious clothes, expensive gadgets, and too much freedom. She is materialistic and very self-centered. She does poorly in school because she spends so much time socializing and playing with her high-tech toys.

In this picture, she is riding home on a rapid transit system after a day of shopping downtown. Her bulky, retro head set is a combination radio, digital music player, and wireless telephone. Her virtual-reality goggles are actually a light, wearable computer. They can allow her to see through them for normal vision, or she can surf the internet or watch TV or digital videos. The ball device in her hand is a type of “universal remote control” that she uses to control her other devices. The wristwatch device on her wrist is a global positioning system.

May I please take inspiration from this picture for a character redesign?

If this is the same character you mentioned before, then I definitely see what you mean about being more colorful. Her design is so fantastically busy, my eyes can't seem to settle on any one thing. This is a girl who seriously loves her gadgets and gizmos.

So many colors... O.O Can't stop staring...

Beautiful work, CP. The continuation of a star-theme throughout the clothing really pulls the character entirely together.

You could try using sharper gradients in the shadows on the ground and the bench, because they look a little flat at the moment. Otherwise, this piece is a great example of your style, and shouldn't be changed one bit.

Talk about color! Man! It looks great, though. I love it when you submit something new, because you've always worked so hard on it.

I just gotta ask for the sake of asking, because I always ask this: What program did you use?

I love all the technical gadgets--it really gives the feeling of "future". All the colors make it seem a little retro, though, but that's cool. Who knows WHAT will be back in style in twenty years.

For the things that you colored black, just remember, it doesn't have to be perfectly black. I usually use a lighter shade of black, or a super dark gray, and it still turns out looking black, and the lines don't disappear.

I love her hair and tail, and I am in love with that background.

Really late reply.

Thank you. I sketched the scene and inked the character on paper, then used Photoshop 6 to do the coloring and the background.
You hit the nail on the head regarding the fashion. It was supposed to be both futuristic and retro. Things have a tendency to go in and out of fashion. I was trying for garish, 1980's-ish colors. They're mostly out of style now, but I think they'll be back.

I think I was trying to avoid using "perfect black" but it came out too dark anyway. That was a problem I had with some other pictures: they looked great on my old iMac monitor, but too dark on others, even when I messed with brightness settings. I have a different monitor now so hopefully that won't be a problem.
