Can't go wrong with practice, but the way this picture looks, you don't need it.

Hiya, thanks a bunch for the kind words Someone said earlier that it reminded them of Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia.. now that they've mentioned it, i can see it and have to agree.. it's a happy coincidence and well, for me that's just a bonus

Ah ha! No, that's not who she reminds me of, but I can't put my finger on it XD I think it's more the eyes than the rest of the face though Still, great piece ^^

Its a great study given the sophistication of the subject. The colors i guess due to the lighting may have an unusual almost gothic pallor. You seem to focus on the face and give the rest of the subject a muted soft effect.

Hiya, yes that's exactly right. I'm really trying to get 'more loose' with a painterly style, but this takes a lot of practice for me, i have spent many years improving my attention to detail because of my graphic design background so i really have to try hard not to be too precise. One of my favourite artists is Daniel Gerhartz. His loose style is just amazing, if you haven't seen his works then i'd definitely suggest taking a look

Dan Gerhartz is Amazing! I like how his art has a Rococo and impressionist feel to it. Yet it is highly expressive. Interesting "down"grade from digital to the "analog" art of oil painting. Precision is not always a bad trait in art. Although in your painting it reminds me of when one focus on a specific point of the subject accenting it more so than usual.
Your piece is a lot cooler than what Gerhartz seem to do (very warm rich colours)... or maybe its how it got scanned and posted that affected it.

For practice you're doing very well so far!! I love it! Her pose is quite timeless, and she has a sort of charm to her expression; it's really good!

I love this. Absolutely stunning.
However, if I may say so, the girls features make her look old-ish, the high forehead, the wide mouth (just the long line at the side) and the mascara I think. You can't notice it unless you really look into the picture. It looks absolutely cute from afar. It would be PERFECT if she would look cute close-up as well.

Hiya, thanks for your suggestions, i agree with what you're saying too.. but i didn't go too far with it. If i come back to it in the future and tidy a few things up, i'll keep what you've suggested in mind, thanks

Interesting skin hue - do you mix your own flesh tones?
π: 0 β©: 1
CarlBurns In reply to bolsterstone [2012-07-20 13:57:09 +0000 UTC]
Hiya, yes i don't think it's a good idea to use pre-mixed skin tones from a tube. it took me quite a while to develop a pallette for skin alone, but i found the only pallette i'll ever need for any tone of skin.. titanium white, cad yellow, yellow ochre, cad orange, burnt sienna, cad red, alizarin crimson, raw umber and ivory black. Also it's useful to know that you can neutralize colour tone by adding a touch of ivory black and raw umber. Hope that helps
