"As the eldest of my kind, it falls to me, Albinus, to lead our small community and ensure that we remain hidden from the humans who inhabit the city above. It is a formidable task, as the Calvalunae have always been shrouded in mystery and fear. The humans name us hag-seed, the children of witches and devils, monsters born under a baleful moon.

Once we lived openly but now we must hide. We have a network of passages and underground grottoes that we call home, beneath the streets of London. We are careful to only venture out at night, though these days the city is never dark and never quiet.

We have learned to mask our presence and hide our true nature from those who might seek to harm us. We can cloud the minds of humans, planting false memories or making them forget that they ever saw us. And we are skilled at blending in with the crowds, using our powers of illusion to appear as ordinary humans to those who might otherwise suspect us.

Despite all of these precautions, there are always those who stumble upon our hidden world. But we have learned to be quick and discreet in these situations, using our powers to erase their memories and send them on their way, none the wiser.

There are some, a rare few, whose minds are too strong and we cannot make them forget. These we take; we do not harm them, but we do not let them return to the human world. Ever.

It is not an easy life, but it is necessary if we hope to survive in a world that is hostile to our kind. Humans hate and fear what they don’t understand and are quick to demonise the other. But as long as we remain hidden and keep to the shadows, we can live in peace, safe from the dangers that lurk above."

The Calvalunae, or mooncalves, are the offspring of witches and demons. Despite their monstrous appearance, they are not inherently evil and fear humans as much as humans fear them.

This is an idea I've had kicking round for years, born partly out of my obsession with the movie Nightbreed. It's far from perfect, thanks to the studio taking the butcher's knife to Clive Barker's original cut, but I love it anyway.
