Jack McCabe wasn't a bad man. He wasn't a good man either. He drank and cursed and could be downright quarrelsome when a few whiskeys to the good. But he worked hard and was trying to save enough money to buy a ranch and start a family with his sweetheart Nattie. McCabe's troubles began when he hired on as a cowhand with a man named Hannes Bitterwolf. His new employer was a respectable businessman, a store owner and rancher in Pima County, Arizona. Few people suspected that he was also an alchemist and servant of The Desolation King , a sinister entity who sought to spread chaos and despair across the frontier.

McCabe got along well with Bitterwolf, who appeared good-natured if a little eccentric, and soon found himself promoted to ranch foreman. But then, while out searching for a stray steer, McCabe stumbled upon a hidden cave in a nearby valley, its entrance obscured by thorny brush. Thinking it was being used as a hideout by rustlers, McCabe drew his pistol and ventured inside, where he discovered something far worse than cattle thieves.

Within the dimly lit cavern, Hannes Bitterwolf conducted his dark experiments. Strange apparatuses lined the walls, alembics and retorts and bubbling vats emitting foul-smelling vapours, while creatures of twisted flesh writhed in cages, their anguished cries echoing through the chamber. Bitterwolf was an alchemist of the flesh, seeking ways to transmute the human form rather than base metals. Horrified by what he witnessed, McCabe attempted to flee, but some of Bitterwolf's chimaerical creations seized him before he could escape. Bitterwolf, never one to spurn an opportunity, decided to turn McCabe into a test subject rather than kill him.

McCabe became the unwilling subject of the alchemist's most diabolical experiment yet, an attempt to merge the animal and vegetable kingdoms. Injected with strange concoctions, McCabe underwent a horrifying transformation. The process was agonizing, thorny spines piercing his flesh, blood turning to sap, skin thickening, becoming tough and fibrous and green. But Bitterwolf underestimated the strength of his latest creation and was unable to prevent McCabe from fighting his way out of the cave.

Now, as Cactus Jack, he is a silent, solitary figure who roams the desert, shunning humanity, even his beloved Nattie, using his new form’s strength and resilience to fight the servants of the Desolation King. Though he may appear prickly on the outside, deep down, Cactus Jack harbours a heart of gold and a fierce determination to rid the frontier of the Desolation King's insidious influence. Hannes Bitterwolf sends his monstrous creations to hunt him down, but Cactus Jack is always one step ahead. Nattie, for her part, doesn't believe that Jack is dead or ran out on her, and still searches for him, refusing to give up hope that he will one day return to her.
