Description Nanite swarms haunt the thin air of the mineral-rich planet K489 Lyrae, better known as Butler's World.

They disable the drive systems of any spacecraft arriving on the planet, making it a one-way trip unless one can afford to access the proprietary anti-nanite technology owned by Subramani Deep Space Enterprises.

The nanite dust seems to have been designed to prevent people from leaving the planet. It targets gravitic vehicles designed for atmospheric flight as well, possibly because some models are capable of reaching low orbit.

For the independent miners, the cost of maintaining and repairing gravitic vehicles is prohibitively high. Spare parts are scarce and the constant battle against the nanites drains both their resources and their resolve.

Many rely on domesticated animals for transport instead. Camelopes have long served as beasts of burden and mounts on arid colony worlds with thin atmospheres, and they have proven to be well-suited to Butler's World. Foul-tempered and fast, they now form the backbone of transportation for the independent miners.

Here we see Everett Hagen, a dustdigger (as Subramani employees scathingly refer to the independents) and member of the Free Miners Alliance, riding out to his claim on the back of his camelope, an ornery but steadfast specimen he affectionately calls Surly.
