Prior to the Benefactors arrival on Earth in 1897, Harriet Meacham was a successful writer, noted for two widely-acclaimed books on etiquette, The Ladies Manual of Good Manners and The Complete Guide to Polite Society.

These days, she teaches Benefactors how to navigate the baffling and bizarre world of Victorian etiquette without making social gaffes. She teaches them when to shake hands, how to bring a conversation politely to a close, how to sit and stand gracefully, how to conduct themselves at a dinner party or ball, where and when to leave a calling card, and how to address nobility.

Mrs Meacham has a number of high-profile Benefactor clients, including Hikatto pictured here. Although she receives no financial recompense for her services, she has gained considerable influence through working closely with high-ranking Benefactors, helping her husband secure a senior position at the Xanadu Office.

Many view her as a collaborator, no better than the politicians, but nothing could be further from the truth. Behind her polite smile and impeccable manners, Mrs Meacham despises the Benefactors and is prepared to risk her life to help free the people of Earth from their control.

When one of Lord Salisbury's agents approached her about becoming a spy for the nascent resistance movement, Harriet Meacham accepted without hesitation, despite the risks.

Her double life is a carefully guarded secret; even her husband suspects nothing. Her position as a teacher of etiquette to the Benefactors allows her to move freely and gather information unnoticed. It is a dangerous game, but she is committed to the cause.
