Description
It was just a silly sketch, and I know amphibians ain't supposed to have claws, but he didn't look right without 'em. The grass was more difficult to paint than the rest of the pic; now I hate Grass as much as Swampert does!Related content

this is stunning, I love the style.
Swampert looks great and the foliage and the water are wonderful!

how you can hate grass?! It looks gorgeous, I want to touch it...! And then hug that Swampert
I also like how you made the water- fast, loose, but good brushstrokes and color choice.
I'm glad to see you even made water edge where the sand is soaked.
Omg...! *W* do I see right? no, it can't be...you drew its scales like I, probably only one in the World, see Swampert scales as....
Samurai armour~!
lol seriously, you know I have OC Swampert that I see as Samurai, because this Pokemon orange scales reminds me of Samurai characteristic armour after I drew them realistically, so in more square shape.
uhm...please don't get me bad, but did you missed one of left gills or it was for purpose?(yeah you can say it was for purpose, like it has lost it in fight X3 )

I'm jokin' about the grass, cos I tried it several times with several layers and it didn't look right. The usual lazy grass blades would be okay on land but not on a tiny island, and not after I googled a photo of marsh weeds. As for the water, I make it like that all the time and don't want to paint proper reflections and such - I'm perfectly content with water that is recognizeable as water, too lazy to make it realistic. As I must've mentioned sometime, laziness may be good for art.
The scales were random but near the end I decided to make those patches more detailed, and thought they need flexibility. But the idea of Samurai armor is awesome, and now I'm thinkin' of more scaly Swampert designs, with more of that "armor". I like variations among the species: some may be smaller and faster (probably with a nature like Hasty) while others may be heavier and have more scales (some +Defense natures).
Those gills aren't visible because of the angle, but "lost in a fight" is cool and realistic Also, the tail may be jagged naturally or be a little worn out.
As I made progress with the painting, the character accumulated details and little ideas in my head. I'm not familiar with Hoenn and whether there are any marshlands, but I imagine the Trainer meeting this beast while making her way through a swamp. He talks, like many Pokemon in stories do, and reveals that his name is Gills, well, because it was a good name for a Mudkip when he was one. His Trainer didn't make it through some Gym and gave up, going to some Lawyer school as he was told by parents. So the Swampert was released in a "natural habitat", where he quickly got bored and "sick of that frog-and-kelp diet", as he would grumpily tell the passing Trainer. He would finish his tale with a question, whether the Trainer has any Pokeballs or not, because he hates walking Though he would regret that decision many times, as the Trainer happens to have an insolent she-Grovyle by the name of Lash, who constantly teases him and calls him Grumps or Grumpert, which of course doesn't improve his mood. He isn't happy with his "childish" name either, until the Trainer suggests that Gills may be short for Gilbert, which "at least sounds decent". The two Pokemon would have a lot of hilarious quarrels, but in the end it would become a pairing, lol

If you keep 'lazines' style for the whole background or drawing, it is indeed good.
By the way...I have like fetish for sketchy or loose style XD
omg omg really?! don't say, I will be happy just to know you like it so much~!
ahahaha that's really cool story! Pairing or just "best bros"

I like sketchy too, it's so full of life and personality.
The story should somehow include a Trainer with a Fire starter which hangs out with this company. In the end this Blaziken would get mad at Lash for bullying Gills and threaten to burn her, but the Swampert snaps at him for interfering, thus revealing that he actually likes Lash and their quarrels amuse him. All these relations involve Type weaknesses a lot, and I like the paradox of a serious, powerful dude being weak to a relatively frail, but a very pushy female. Most suitable Nature for her may be Naughty, while the Swampert feels like Adamant, and the Blaziken is somewhat shy and diffident, always practicing, Bashful maybe.
The name of the Grass starter brings a scene to my mind: the little Treecko asks for a name that is related to Grass but sounds "really-really cool", and the Trainer utters names that come to her mind while the pokemon jumps around slashing at some grass. Not every pokemon talks in this setting, mostly those who've been around people since hatching, like Starters.

It's strange how everyone likes it and I didn't, until I saw a ton of fanart on Tumblr. Fanart makes certain Pokemon feel special to me.

Well, in my case, this pokemon was like a friend in this game. X)
