Description
I tried to make a unique Unicorn by painting a 'paint' UnicornHer colours meet just at her horn giving the dual coloured horn..
Notice she is sans beard... aka a lovely lil mare
She is acrylics, painted on 300g Arches aquarelle using a watercolour technique
I only used two colours in this piece, Ateiler AM prussian blue and their interactive range red-black.....
If any of u guys ever work in Acrylics (and particularly with the Atlier brand) I strongly recommend the toned black range.... it creats gorgeous darks with out the muddy look of black and the hassel of mixing a dark colour... and as you can see the red-black can create alot of tonal depht...
Painted for the HFC competitiion which I had the pleasure of chosing a theme ...

I love everything about this, but the horn. She looks like a gorgeous horse, but it's not working for me like a unicorn. The placement, angle, size, and shape of the horn just looks off when put with how great the rest of the piece is.

She was a gorgeous horse to ref!
Tell me what would you suggest to make the horn seem more natural? I had a good look and was thinking maybe the left eyes seemed too far from the placement of the horn, and that was throwing it off....
The shape and size of the horn are typical of my unicorns so I think they are fine as-is, and would be reluctant to change those elements of it.

First, it is a bit off center, seems to be sprouting more off the top of the nearest eye, than out of her forehead. Because of the placement and angle of the horn, it looks like it was added as an afterthought, as if you didn't want the horn to be in the same spot as the forelock; while the center of the forelock swirl is almost the exact place where the horn should be coming from. And if you raised the angle by anywhere from 5 to 10 degrees, that would make it a seem more natural, and the shape isn't a problem at all, though I think it looks strange to have such a muscular looking horse with thick bones, and then have this tiny, thin, frail looking horn. I would have beefed it out a bit so it went more along the size of the head. Delicate little horns look best on delicate neck and boned horse bases, like if you wanted to use an egyptian arabian base, the more needle-like horn would look more in place, she looks more like a hybrid with some arabian features (like the dished face) but quarter horse bone structure (the nose, the chunky jaw and broad forehead with smaller eyes and thick neck.
Hope that helps.

I can't chance the placement of the horn unfortunitly, but I can keep it in mind for my next uni...
I actually placed the horn on the same spot as the little circlular bit of hair on a horses forehead.. forlock swirl? (I lack the techniqual speek, but if you know horses I'm sure you know what I'm trying to say ) but alas I guess I didn't place it center enough.
I have my own perception of unicorns and their horns, (after all they are a mythical creature) and It seems a bit silly to me to have a overbearing large horn on a mare, alike nature, the females will have smaller 'arsenal' as they are not prone to use them.
Thanks for all your useful info, I have to return the favour and have a look through your gallery

ooh loveley!! so graceful and serene, you're so good at capturing expressions
and if you did a paint, I guess I won't have to worry about having to do a 'white' unicorn for the comp, their traditional colour - white's a scary to paint... I think I'll try a paolomino for mine...

Having said that I love Palominos!!!! And would love to see a Uni Pallie

Gorgeous Caroline!
I love the use of a limited palette in this piece.
Love the concept of this piece too! You can almost guarantee that no-one else has done a 'paint' unicorn before! Such a wonderful idea!

Thank you Lily ... I just wanted to be different,
I prefere a limited palette, I think its due to my graphite experience, but tonal differences hold more value to me that colour plus I have less to worry about

ooooo! Beautifully painted! And she does look like a lovely little mare. ^-^
Hmmm, a ranged tone of blacks you say? Interesting. I know any teacher I ever had said "stay away from using blacks as shadows..blah blah blah..." which is true in a way because you get much more depth with complementary colors as shadowing.
But this toned range of blacks sound most excellent, most excellent indeed!
Marvelous work darling, marvelous work. ^-^

I do that many stallions I thought it was about time a mare had the spotlight.
Yip I used to have a few concoctions to create a dark colour, and using the opposting colour to shadow...
But theses darks are not so much blacks as treally dark toned colours, although having said that I always experiment before heading head-first into a piece, just to know the limitation as well as the benefits if the colour.
Thank you

lol! That's very true. Playing with any new medium is always a good thing before you start anything "serious." I love toned and tinted colors! They make your painting look absolutely gorgeous and mysterious. I should check out the acyrlics you mentioned. Thanks for the tip!
Happy painting! ^-^

They also have a gorgeous toned grey range too
The brand is Atlier and its the 'interactive' paints (they can be slowed right down so they dry at the same speed as oils with water spray) and 'AM' (absoloute matte, they dry matte aliviating that annoying shine acrylics can give off)...
lol they should be paying me for this advertising!!

And thanks for the +fav! ^-^
