General Information :

The fungi-sphinx is named so as a reference to the myth of the Sphinx, a creature with the head of a human and the body of a lion.

In a similar sense, the Fungi-sphinx has the face of the ancient mushroom-humanoids and a feline body. But most mushroom-humanoids either changed their appearance with time or disappeared outright, leading to the Sphinx to wear an unfamiliar face for those currently alive, a living relic of what the past generations looked like. For this reason, the Sphinx has a weird relation with its cohabitants. Non-sentient beings tend to gravitate towards the Sphinx, as a primal memory of the Mushroom-Forest's fauna draws out their reverence for the Sphinx. On the other hand, any sentient mushroom being will feel unease near the Sphinx, their face triggering something similar to the Uncanny valley effect. Other sentient species, like humans, do not suffer from this, but still admit that the Sphinx has an unique aura, creepier than the regular mushroom folk.

The Sphinx's uniqueness extends to its abilities. For mushrooms, magic is genetic, an innate ability that cannot be changed, but only refined and repurposed, and for this, it is called "essence"[1] among mushroom folk. The essence of a Sphinx is the creation of subspaces around itself, subspaces in which other beings cannot use their essence/magic. And in this subspace, the Sphinx will proceed to test someone's mind or soul.

No One's Tower Lore:

There is a legend of a Sphinx living inside No One's Tower, but it might be a misinterpretation of an Eye-sore demon, a creature that induces madness onto those that look at it for too long. Nonetheless, a Sphinx remains one of the trickiest challenges that one could meet inside the Tower.
