Description This is a walk through for people who like to use references heavily, which in my eyes is completely fine. As long as you learn from it! So this was what I thought was required for a group's competition but ends up I misunderstood so this is just going to turn into a quick learning tut. Hope you enjoy

I'm defiantly going to try this! I have real trouble with my action poses and under saddle poses so this technique will really help me!

Very helpful. Sometimes ya gotta use a ref so you know where all the limbs go. I like refs for poses cause you can get a better idea what parts you can and can't see.

Nice tutorial! I never do this, but it really seems like a good way to learn, especially for people who can't actually be around horses to learn their anatomy. ^^

It is how I taught myself in Middle school when I first began drawing horses. Now I have had 2 horses and my current one is a very good model

haha, most horses are good models, they just love to show off!

Pretty brave of you to do this, and I agree that tracing is a good way to learn, though I don't do it myself, I still think there isn't anything particularly wrong with it c:

Very nice tutorial by the way c:

thank you! And this is how I learned to draw horses back in Middle School. I rarely use refs anymore but occasionally when I can't see to make something look right I will look at a picture and be like "ahh, that's why this looks off"

I don't even think this is tracing. It is simply finding positioning and posing. The actual drawing was all you so I wouldn't call it tracing, and when someone says this is tracing then its like they are grouping it with art that lacks originality completely.

CasablancaStudios In reply to Converse-Forever [2011-06-28 01:52:44 +0000 UTC]

Well I guess it is partial tracing cause you are drawing over a picture. But it is not true tracing where you draw an outline over the picture, with this you learn.

I think this a great way to learning and getting better - although we all naturally want to end up getting the same result freehand
But it's a shame that so many get bashed in the head for doing this, as if it was the same as outline tracing. So I think it's great if people learn to divide tracing into different categories

Converse-Forever In reply to DaneStables [2011-06-27 20:56:09 +0000 UTC]

Exactly! I hate to call this tracing, though I know its not completely freehand just because tracing is a word that is generally associated with complete outline tracing.

DaneStables In reply to Converse-Forever [2011-06-27 20:58:04 +0000 UTC]

totally agree - it's become sorta a "dirty word" so it's great that casa will help show others what it can also be

Very well done! This is part of how I went from not knowing how to draw horses to being able to draw them both skeleton and reference free these days! Skeletal traces really help you learn how the horses body fits together at all the different points.

CasablancaStudios In reply to BVicius [2011-06-28 01:50:23 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! This is how I taught myself to draw horses when I first started in Middle school. It does teach you proportions and eventually you get good enough that you can just look at something that you sketched and say this is too short, that angle is not right, etc etc.

A lot of people made a huge deal about tracing a little bit ago and I have nothing against it if you are learning.

BVicius In reply to CasablancaStudios [2011-06-28 03:27:45 +0000 UTC]

Nope, nothing wrong with it if you are learning and honest about it in my personal opinion. I think it is when people feel like you've hidden it from them they feel like they've been lied to. I have many pieces in my gallery that have been drawn through anatomy tracing. =DaneStables , *BangGoesReality , and *shannonfae have been the greatest confidence builders, really helping me to make the leap and go skeletal free a month or so ago, and as of about a week ago I have begun drawing ref free. It shows that it helps you get those proportions correct, as well as store the know how of a frame works to make possible poses.

I removed this and the final image from the contest folder. Then I re-submitted this to tuts and did a little blog on it.
Hope people take this as a friendly push towards learning

cool beans! this is how i sometimes do it when im art blocked! and most times, instead of doing the shapes, i will just do circles at the joints and lines so i can get the correct pose

hi

we got a problem regarding the 2011 Challenge.
Rules clearly states, that tracing in any way is not allowed for these entries or anything related to the mentor group.

When it comes to tracing, I however appreciate the way, that you do it. Truth is that a skeleton tracing is a great way to learn, because you fill out the body yourself instead of tracing an outline, and I have used the method myself for learning practice.
But in the group we allow no tracing at all, since in order to learn more, you need to do 100% original art as well - and that's what mentor-group is about ...

CasablancaStudios In reply to DaneStables [2011-06-25 12:47:33 +0000 UTC]

Oh, sorry. I thought that was what you wanted, us to use the ref picture to create. Like actually use that exact pose. I can do a different image if that is ok?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DaneStables In reply to CasablancaStudios [2011-06-25 12:53:46 +0000 UTC]

yes, you have untill the deadline to create something new
I want you to use the ref - but as a ref, not any kind of trace

However!
I think you should promte the wip you have as a "How to trace - and learn!"
If you want that, I would like to help promote it through the group, since I really wish people would stop doing outline traces. If you have to trace - then do it like you did and LEARN and get better ^^
