Because Hawkfrost tricked Firestar into getting trapped in the fox trap because he was trying to get Brambleclaw to murder Firestar, and he is proud of himself for succeeding in the first step of his plan.

No, Hawkfrost was the one killed when Brambleclaw stabbed him with the wooden stake. Firestar was caught in the trap, but not killed. Jake died a natural death as a kittypet. He was never trapped.
