Description

Inspired by one of ~alaska-is-a-husky 's stamps.

People assign all sorts of mental & emotional disorders to their OCs with no idea about what it means. Depression does take a back seat to partying. ADHD affects hobbies and emergencies just as severely as they affect homework. Eating disorders can have long-term effects that linger even after the disorder itself has been controlled. Obsessive-compulsives can have severe anxiety attacks if their "rules" aren't followed.

Unspecified disorders are fine, but if you're going to say it's a specific disorder, then the symptoms should be consistent.

On the other hand, hypochondriacs probably shouldn't research these things too thoroughly...

As with a few of my other stamps, yes, this is something I've been guilty of in the past as well. I now have considerably fewer characters with specific disorders. Partly because I keep convincing myself I have everything I research, partly because I'm just lazy as a writer.

I do that, but I don't know if I'm doing it right even if I researched about it. XD

Research is awesome!

However, I always feel like I need to explain myself for what my character does. The research is now starting to affect the story negatively. Maybe I'm trying too hard not to portray Schizophrenia inaccurately. It seems the less research I do, the less likely I'll screw it up. (Then again, I seem to have this magical ability to know how to portray something before I research.)

What helps me with my characters is getting dreams of them, my character robert moonshine has paranoid schizo, with him he usually gets mad a lot, he sometimes don't know what he does, and he also talks to his weapons that he thinks talks to him, there are also other things he does because he literally thinks a lot of things talk to him.

True, I'm honestly the same way, my character Alpha doom has been through a lot of abuse from his father, their relationship is a more extreme version of the relationship I have with my mom.

I understand. That's why I usually only give my OCs mental disorders that I have too because it's easier to portray it then. That way it feels authentic when I write.Β

So far its worked!Β

Good stuff! It really helps to talk to a person with the disorder you're researching, that can be more accurate than the stuff online.

Also, people with OCD don't necessarily keep everything super neat. My room was a fucking nest full of garbage I couldn't throw away, and just because I had very difficult systems of arrangement, doesn't mean it was kept in order in common understanding of the word "order".

I have a few OC's with disorders. One of my OC's, Carolina Mason, is autistic. Another one of my Original Characters, Harold Rivers, has a physical disorder which left him with a vertical scar on his chest. Β In Carolina's case, I did my research into autism (as I'm autistic myself), but in the case of Harold Rivers, I left his condition ambiguous until after I have done my research. But I will reveal the name of Harold's condition when I do a profile on him.

He Kills Yoshies Because He Believes That's Why They Exist

He Doesn't Assume "Neutral" Characters Have A Significant Reason To Live, But No Point In Killing Either.

He Tags A VERY Specific Reason For Living For Anyone He's On Good Terms With.

Everyone gives their OC depression and shit and I'm like, "Bitch, you don't know how hard depression and that crap is!" I deal with a lot of disorders, such as depression, SDD. ADHD, and many more. I have been put on meds for all of them, but most of the time they don't work. I lie a lot about it and keep to myself about. This one time at Band Practice (OMG OFF TOPIC)one of the highschoolers said, "I couldn't be a Teacher, I'd end up killing a kid or killing myself." I told him not to say that around me. It's just a huge problem with me and how I live. If I never said anything to one person I wouldn't be like this. I just hate it when people give their OCs depression at most. I get it if it's a persona and you have, but, uh, like don't.

Yeah, I usually stick with disorders I'm familiar with (mostly because I have them) for my characters. As in, several of my characters are Autistic, but they have different special interests and different stims and different things that make them go into sensory overload

I'll definitely need this stamp as a reminder. One OC I've considered specifically having either Intermittent Explosive Disorder or Left Temporal Lobe Epilepsy to explain her anger problems; her sister is an epileptic ranging from the petit mals to the grand mals; their grandma has albinism which plays a FICTIONAL biological reason for one of the granddaughters' appearances (And please note I'm NOT trying to satirize on the disorders in ANY way! ). In the least of disorders, I've created one OC that has an allergy to penicillin and a stronger reaction to bee/wasp stings (I just need to make sure the symptoms make some fair realistic sense).

Wait... I thought that depression doesn't take a back seat to partying?
Ikr? I mean, this annoys me even for non-OCs. Like, insane does not equal violent, nor is it something to laugh at. Think about if any work made fun of a physical disability. It would start a firestorm in no time flat, but schizophrenia? OCD? Depression? ITS FUNNEHHH!!! :/

I do have a headcanon for a character I characterize as insaneΒ but it's not a very severe case and he's only violent if neglected or someone pisses him off by hurting his friends.Β I also have another one who has something based on depression, but not specifically, since it's a very personal thing for many and I don't want to fudge it up. Though he also does have Asperger's/High Functioning Autism, which I canΒ write since I already have it. Still need to research it because it's different for everyone, though. I genrally try not to go for specifics.

I know what you mean, I always research those types of things.

I have a character, Angel/Steve. He has autism and I already know how that goes. He's twenty years old and he acts like a six year old (so adorable and sad) He loves to line up his toys and only stack his blocks. He's just the most endearing thing I swear. He also has sensory issues, so he can't feel much in his butt, but he feels everything in his back, his feet, and a few other places. He is not a picky eater though. He also refuses to wear pants because they don't feel good, so he wears skirts instead.
I know what I'm talking about. All seven people in my family have it. (Although it's not really a mental disorder, it was just a good example)

I made a character named Nicolas (earth pony) with Alien Hand Symdrome and I had to use Wikipedia and read the whole page to understand it
Althought I still have a doubt which is if it's possible for the Alien Hand Symdrome affect the whole arm (not even Wikipedia says if it can or can't, so, I'm stuck with this), I gace a story for him showing for he got it, the picture still on my sta.sh and his story still unfinish.

But, I honestly didn't know that people didn't searched for the disorders for they characters. I have a character named Ana (unicorn) with paranoia (schizophrenia) but, I offer keep frogewting it and I think I have to change to other disorder or symdrome since I think schizophrenia doesn't really fit to her kind of character...

Exactly, and that is more of raising awareness. You're trying to show that people can still function with a mental disorder. The point I was trying to make(which at the time I didn't make exactly clear.) Is that it bothers me when people give their characters or OCs mental disorders because everyone else does, and it's 'cute'.Β
