Description
Inspired by one of ~alaska-is-a-husky 's stamps.
People assign all sorts of mental & emotional disorders to their OCs with no idea about what it means. Depression does take a back seat to partying. ADHD affects hobbies and emergencies just as severely as they affect homework. Eating disorders can have long-term effects that linger even after the disorder itself has been controlled. Obsessive-compulsives can have severe anxiety attacks if their "rules" aren't followed.
Unspecified disorders are fine, but if you're going to say it's a specific disorder, then the symptoms should be consistent.
On the other hand, hypochondriacs probably shouldn't research these things too thoroughly...
As with a few of my other stamps, yes, this is something I've been guilty of in the past as well. I now have considerably fewer characters with specific disorders. Partly because I keep convincing myself I have everything I research, partly because I'm just lazy as a writer.

Oh my God, thank you. Not to appear to seek attention, I have numerous disorders that falter my identity, and I have no control over them. Seeing people use them for their OC's isn't cool whatsoever, and it really pisses me off.

No,thank you!
As do I,and people tell me how LUCKY and SPECIAL I am to have them!!!!
It isn't. I feel trapped all the time. I don't know why people want to be special in that sort of way.

schizophrenia... ah boy...
Fangirls often forget these traits :
- Odd or irrational statements
- Forgetful; unable to concentrate Β
- Strange use of words or way of speaking
- Hostility
- Inappropriate laughter or crying
- Extreme reaction to criticism

Schizophrenic people should be portrayed as less hostile. They're more likely to be victims of violence than actually being violent.

SaltyEevee In reply to Djeur [2014-06-04 01:16:59 +0000 UTC]
Depends on the case... I guess.
Males with the conditionΒ are more lightly to be aggressive and females are more lightly to be victims.
''The patients in this sample showed a surprisingly high level of aggression: 52% verbal aggression in male patients (46% in females), 39% aggression against objects (25% in females), 23% against self (9% females) and 39% against other people (34% females) as measured by the OAS. Data on prevalence of aggression and violence in people with schizophrenia differ widely depending on definition and assessment ''

OCD isn't just washing your hands all the time, Schizophrenia isn't just seeing or hearingΒ things, Bipolar isn't just having good and bad days, Tourette's isn't just swearing randomly, etc. Nobody who makes OC's seems to comprehend that these days.

This stamp! I agree!
I tend to only give my characters disorders from either personal experience or I have researched into it for other reasons.
But I think the funniest illness I have had some-one get wrong was jet lag.Β They gave their character jet lag even though the plane trip was only a few hours.

I have seen OCs with depression, schizophrenia, bipolarism, ADD, ADHD, and Stockholm syndrome all in one package and it it makes me wonder if they even KNOW what any of these are (Not to mention they have wings, horns, glitter, or some other junk).

HellIsWhereYouBelong In reply to Teleway [2014-08-17 19:15:21 +0000 UTC]
I bear nearly all of the disorders you listed, and I can tell you I know positively what their symptoms and definitions are. Except for Stockholm... Never was tested for that.
But I do agree. I hate how people don't research these things. They wouldn't want these disorders, believe me, so why use them for their OC's? It makes no sense.

Yes...There's conditions that, even if they're common, people have little knowledge of. For example, I have had a VERY severe case of Scoliosis since I was shoot...11 I think. My spine twisted into a 90 degree angle and my ribcage detached and floated away from my spine and I was developing a bit of a hump...all this in a few months time. I had to wear a body brace (that I unaffectionetly called a corset because of the tightness) for my full 6th grade year and rather then ask me what happened, kids kept their distance and called me "Body Armor".
It's sickening to me how people will slap some physical or mental condition onto a character without any research about like what it'd do to the individual or to those surrounding the person with the physical or mental condition. We all have our burdens to bare and most of us usually aren't proud of em.

I do research on these things before I even start writing a story with a disease or disorder mentioned. I have ADD and it drives me bonkers when someone who is just forgetful claims to have ADD and they don't realize that it is not just some weird term for forgetfulness that it has to do with concentration and organization among other things.

CassidyPeterson In reply to imaginationqueen [2013-10-16 03:20:37 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I have ADD too, and it doesn't make me forget things - it sometimes makes me not notice being told to do things, but when I forget to do things, that's not ADD at all.

imaginationqueen In reply to CassidyPeterson [2013-10-16 04:03:43 +0000 UTC]
I forget things, but usually it's because I wasn't completely paying attention to begin with or it's just due to the fact that I'm naturally forgetful and would possibly forget my own head if it weren't attached. It has little to nothing to do with ADD it's just people don't understand ADD. You say AD/HD and they get it for the most part or they just think you're hyper and I am by no means hyper.

I actually am writing a book in which magical creatures have mental and neurological problems and I've gotten so far into my reasearch that I've associated different conditions with certain kinds of creature. I've noticed different trends with the stuff and I'm trying to make the universe make as much sense as possible.
