It's really happening ladies & gentlemen. I'm back again. (: Feels good!

This is a basic sketch that I've made this morning of Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes of the BBC series. I love the way he searches for solutions and the way they have portrayed him in the show. Awesomesauce.

I will work this into a full-blown detailed and conceptual drawing. I have 2 concepts in mind, but I haven't made up my mind about what I should do. Until then, a work in progress will do.

Besides, I really enjoy the unfinished look of the drawing, so I polished it a bit with a vintage layer that I use for pretty much everything 8D aaaaand post it as my first submission after 3 months of absence. W00t! I'm excited like C.R.A.Z.Y. Aaaahh!!

To those who are interested, you can read on further for a short tutorial-esque description about the techniques and guidelines that I've used!

Cheers!

:-:~~~~~:-:~~~~~:-:~~~~~:-:~~~~~:-:~~~~~:-:

Lets give a brief introduction about what I've done so far, shall we? (:

The outlines were mostly done with an "F" 0.5mm mechanical pencil, which I purchased just recently, AND LOVING IT. "F" leads show strong lines, yet they are easy to erase when mistakes have been made.

So remember: F and H pencils = GOOD for sketching!!

-----

I used a grid, mostly to get the pattern right which is displayed in the background. While the human face and figure are easy to do freehand because they are asymmetric and show some sort of flow most of the time, shapes like this pattern or any kind of (unnatural) shape are so much harder to draw, because you need to fulfill certain types of rules to make them look natural. And that's why I used a grid, to make sure all shapes are in the right places and look natural.

-----

The size of the drawing itself is 20x20cm / 8"x8" big, a size I've never worked on. I'm trying new things. (:

-----

On the left I wrote some of my ideas on the places where I might work them out. This way I won't forget their purpose during the drawing progress. Writing down words on my drawing surface ain't something I do often, but it makes a nice addition while I can let go of my ideas and focus on the drawing again.

-----

For basic sketches I prefer to intensify contrasting colours and proportions. This I do by using dark pencils such as 2B for the darkest parts, and 2H for the lightest parts. The in-between parts are done with H and F. This way it's easier to continue. You no longer have to worry if certain parts of the drawing look right or wrong proportional-wise.

Thank you so much, and you're welcome! When I began as an aspiring artist, I noticed the lack of decent information about how and what to use for drawing. I hope I can help others this way, because I know it can be quite useful when you want to develop your own drawing techniques

This is lovely! I wish I could draw people, then I would be all over Benny.Sadly, I find he has a very complex face, so I don't even dare to try.

I thought he would be hard to draw too. BUT he is, in fact, super easy to draw! Well not super easy... but he isn't hard to draw, if you know what I mean you should give it a try. You'll be surprised about the things that you can create!

I missed you too! I missed the people, the art, things that are going on. It wasn't my intention to live a life without internet access for 3 months and the lack of inspiration. But hey I'm back again, to draw and communicate. That's all that matters for now.

Also, your signature is awesome go team Buffy & Winchesters

Oh my God, you replied to me. *state of mental shock*
You are one of my main sources of inspiration for drawing, not even just drawing in general, but I've actually learned so much from your tutorials and just looking at your portraits. I am IN LOVE with your work.
I just want to say thank you for being such an amazing artist and person because you really gave me the drive to want to be a better artist myself.

I'm so happy that's you're back! And I completely understand about the internet access thing, I couldn't do any school work for a month because my computer broke. :L

Heehee, thank you! I love my signature. Dean Winchester is nom.
And thanks again for replying to me, I didn't think you would, being so internet famous and stuff.
Much love,
Asia

Oh, I forget to ask, what is F pencil? I have never heard about it.. Where can you buy this? I think that salesman would look at me like at some crazy girl if I would ask him to sell me that..

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Cataclysm-X In reply to croatian-artist-girl [2012-04-01 12:36:38 +0000 UTC]

F stands for the degree of the pencillead. It's between H (hard & light) pencil and B (soft and dark), or more specifically: between H and HB. And therefore F pencil leads are suitable for sketching!

Thank you my friend! I haven't finished a highly detailed realism piece on a regular size of paper for a LONG time, because I keep finishing them off like THIS, lol. But I am definitely planning to stick to my plan this time, which will be a mix of drawing from reference + adding this concept that I have in mind (:

Glad to hear from you again as well. Gosh.. how I have missed you all!
