My 5th tutorial's done!!!Click download to get the larger version.
I know what you're thinking:
'But... oh mighty =Cataclysm-X , why art thou submitting a tutorial which wasn't shown in thy poll?'
lol
Well... like this tutorial says: just 'cause.
Actually, I think it makes more sense if you read this tutorial before you'll see my next (upcoming) tutorials:
Besides, I'm looking for my muse. I lost it a week ago. I started with several drawings (actors, Kingdom Hearts...) but none of them look right.
Has anyone seen my muse anywhere? If you'll find it, you'll get a free cookie.
I used the work in progress files of my Jared Leto drawing to get this done.
I knew I could use those WIPs for something useful someday...
Anyway, have fun with this tutorial!! Hope you'll find it useful!!!

thanks for the tutorial ^^ it's funny that you just start drawing an eye, most people start off with a circle, and devide the face in parts to make it easier. you just start, draw and make a godlike piece xD

oh, my gosh. >_<
you made want to go and draw something for my boyfriend for christmas. :]
i usually start with the eye, too, actually. but my professors get quite angry with me for it -- they believe one should concentrate on the face first and details later.
psh.

when you're shading, do you shade in darker parts or lighter parts first? especially for clothing.

That is actually very useful. You're right we all have our own styles, but I do like to see how others do it. Get some tips and adapt them to better work for my needs. Thanks for this. I've been studying some different styles by different portrait artist. (yours included) and this really progresses that along.
I love cookies. ;.; You can have my muse if you want. She sleeps a little too much, but you know.... cookie.

Awesome Tutorial! As always - you totally Rock with anything you do girl! WOOT! Love it and thank you - I really need to become more structured in the formation of a portrait - I will often move from one area to another instead of concentrating on just one area. This oftentimes leads me to have to support my arm/hnad to keep it from wiping into the detail area of another part (grrrrr - hate when that happens
). This is beautifully done by a complete master of the craft!

Supurb work mate - quite simply top drawer...
There will be those who argue that your tutorial will teach bad habits because you work as if you are doing a jigsaw puzzle (ie piece by piece).
Traditionalists will say that most people out there simply lack the skill to work the way you do. While they CAN deliver a brilliant piece once they have finished with their art, it will have been done working the entire page/canvas - all at the same time. In that way, they can get proportions right as well as compositional layouts and focal points.
Neither point of view is in my opinion wrong, but perhaps both sides should emphasize that there are other ways to go about getting a good result.
Essentially most people will find it impossible to achieve what you are doing (the way you and I do it - yep I tend to work this way as well). It can be a source of frustration to them because they might emulate you and not be aware that there are other ways to achieve the end result....
Keep up the astonishing work

I do, too. It helps a lot, because your face's proportions can be compared to the eyes. The Rule of Thirds and Rule of Fifths but help me tremendously. Of course, I'm nowhere near your skill level yet-- I did my first self portrait a few days ago and it's... meh. It looks like me, at least, but... Pfft, I dunno.
I have no problem with proportion; it's shading and blending that get me every time. I'm working on it, though.
It's nice to see more of your art, Nic. (It's okay if I call you Nic, right? o.o) Sorry your muse disappeared. Maybe it went to get drunk with mine. It disappeared last night: the only night I found time to draw something. -_-

I always start with the face shape (or try to) but I'm gonna see if eyes make it any easier. My art teacher at school sucked, he never told me these things -_-

Cataclysm-X In reply to spiritpaintedsin [2007-11-30 11:08:33 +0000 UTC]
That's a great technique too!! I have 3 ways of getting started with a drawing, also the one you mentioned, but I prefer this (the tutorial) the most.
Seems like artteachers don't tell their pupils how to draw stuff like this. It's weird
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
spiritpaintedsin In reply to Cataclysm-X [2007-11-30 11:16:33 +0000 UTC]
With starting with the face I sometimes have trouble jamming all the features into the little space Worth trying something else. I just don't concentrate enough when I'm doing it so I don't figure out the proportions properly.
We never got taught how to draw! We got lectured about Salvador bloody Dali for about eight months but never taught techniques for learning to draw. if you couldn't draw you just improvised and made a model or something. The lessons sucked. I'm thinking of going for an evening art class that will actually be half useful but I've got no idea which one to join. Hopefully I can find a book with good stuff in.
