hi
I wasn't looking for a tutorial, but this is really cool! you have a good sense of humor...how did you know i'd be sniffing the sharpie?
haha thanks, and do you know if you can send shrinky dink paper through an inkjet printer?

I believe they make a specific kind of Shrinky-Dink paper you can send on through a printer. I haven't tried it myself, just make sure you get the right kind though!

I also like Minwax water-based polycrylic (available at many home improvement places). Or you might want to try out some acrylic sprays perhaps? I was considering giving some of those a try, but haven't been back to the craft store recently (ughhh trying to curb craft store addiction)
Something like this: [link]
If you try them out let me know if they work! If you remember. If. Iffff

dammn what about some sorta clear-drying glue
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
CatharsisJB In reply to Claytron [2011-03-11 20:28:12 +0000 UTC]
The prob. with clear-drying glue (which is essentially what Mod Podge is, which is why i double-seal with something else) is that it generally dries a bit tacky or is easily nicked, and if it gets wet looks white again. Which is especially a problem if you use these as charms on a necklace and you sweat or weep copiously

Oh Shriny Dinks I haven't made them in years now. Great tutorial very usefull.
I have some clear Shriny Dink paper and mothing I use will colour on it very well and my markers take ages to dry on it. Would you say Frosted is better and more easy for colouring? Also do you know any good brand for them, the one I got seem to be some what crap. Mine are called 'shrinkels clear' and nothing seems to colour well on them. Maybe it was due to me using clear ones for it and not frosted.

SO CUTE OHMYGOODNESS ;____;
Say, does it matter if the shrink paper is white? Or does if have to be clear on the other side?

CatharsisJB In reply to HeavenlySheep [2011-02-20 14:55:54 +0000 UTC]
If it's white you can only color on one side, it won't show through like my colors do on this one obviously.

Yeah Crayola is pretty low-grade; you can try them and they might work though.

I have a question! I've been playing with Shrinky Dinks for some time now, and when I tried something similar to this, the permanent marker on the shiny side of the plastic "stuck" to the parchment paper. When it was cool and I pulled it up, most of my marker lines came off the paper.
I tried it with aluminum foil as well, which doesn't stick, but does leave an uneven surface on the plastic (which is, I'm sure, why they suggest parchment paper instead)
Have you run into this problem? If so, do you have any suggestions? Thank you!

CatharsisJB In reply to MandySeley [2010-07-13 12:31:46 +0000 UTC]
Hm, I guess I haven't run into this. What brand of marker are you using, and have you tried playing with the temps?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
MandySeley In reply to CatharsisJB [2010-07-13 18:01:05 +0000 UTC]
Sharpie markers, both fine and ultra-fine.
I did bake the first batch too hot by mistake, though lowering the temperature to the recommended 325 still seemed to make it stick. I just reread your tutorial, and I use a toaster oven, too... maybe mine runs hot as well? I'll give it a shot on some test pieces tonight at 300 instead.
I also wonder if it might be the paper. I just grabbed paper from a notepad I keep in the kitchen. It's smooth like normal copy paper, but colored - perhaps I need to use actual white parchment paper for best results...
Thanks for your reply.

CatharsisJB In reply to MandySeley [2010-07-13 18:43:19 +0000 UTC]
Toaster ovens can be so hit-or-miss, sometimes. Mine bakes very hot, so I go with a much lower dial temp for almost all of my crafts and they turn out well.
Also yes! Parchment paper can make a big difference. If you don't have that, maybe paper lunch bag or paper bag from the grocery store (though I don't know of any stores around here that still use the brown paper bags...)

I didn't realize parchment paper had a slight waxy coating until my boyfriend picked up some for me today. I thought it was pretty much just white paper!
Tried the parchment paper and lowering the temperature, and my two test charms just came out perfectly. No weird marks or ink lifting off the plastic like before. Thank you very much for your advice!

Do a few very small test pieces to see how far your oven shrinks it.

I would really love to try this, but I don't think they sell Shrinky-Dinks in my country... I guess there might be something simular but I have no idea what that would be. If I find something I'll try it... if it's not too expensive. :]

honestly, it's easier to buy it online. even where i am in the states, i can't find them for the life of me anymore in any craft stores.

one thing you failed to mention i think is the degrees of the oven... i think.

CatharsisJB In reply to silvershadow00 [2010-05-03 04:47:14 +0000 UTC]
It's on the package of Shrinky-Dinks and it may differ depending on the kind you use (there are at least 3 different SD kinds, and plenty of knock-offs), so I didn't want to steer anyone wrong. Also, different ovens bake differently; what works for my machine may not work for yours.

I know permanent markers work too, not sure on copics, I haven't tried them yet.
