Description This was an assignment for an art class. The assignment was basically make a whole bunch of art over the semester and present it in an interesting way. I wanted to use yokai as my theme which are Japanese monsters which made me think of pokemon which brought me trading cards. I was planing on buying a large sheet of bristol board and cutting it down but it turns out there's a whole art movement going on where artists make card-sized pieces of art and trade them at swap meets. So the art store already had packs of precut cards for me to work with. Convenient.

Some of the cards started curling up after I painted them so I came up with the idea of glueing origami paper to the backs of them to help uncurl them.

Konakijijii- (“old man who cries like baby” ) This yokai disguises itself as an abandoned baby then cries until someone picks it up. When they do, the Konakijijii reveals its wizened old face and increases its weight until he crushes his victim.

I’m not sure if I got his body right but I tried to make his face look as old as I could.

Konakijijii was colored in Copic maker the background is graphite and color pencil.

Kitsune (fox) After about fifty years or so, foxes are said to sprout an extra tail for every century they live. A nine tailed fox is said to be at the pinnacle of its supernatural ability. They are said to have a myriad of powers including breathing fire, shape-shifting, and human possession.

Seeing as foxes breath fire I thought I would be cool to make its tails look like fire.

Gouache on textured paper.

Jinmenken (man-faced dog) A monster of urban legend said to roam the streets of modern Japan. It typically doesn’t cause much trouble apart from rooting through garbage and yelling at people to leave it alone. However, it’s also said to have the power to take control of cars and cause accidents (thus answering the age old question, “What would he do it he actually caught it?” )

I first read about this monster on in the extras of Ghost Stories (the individual DVDs, you can’t get them in the box set.). I love the weirdness of this monster. I image his personality being a cross between a cantankerous old man and a dog that barks at every other dog it sees. Of course, I haven’t found anything about him since that DVD apart from a small translation note in Parasyte and this Japanese video.

Jinmenken was colored in pencil with a gouache background on textured paper.

Hari-Onago (needle woman) A woman with a thorn-like barb on the tip of each strand of her hair. Her favorite trick is to disguise herself as normal woman and laugh at young men. If the man laughs back, she lets down her hair and attacks.

Copic makers on textured paper.

Ittan-Momen a strip of cotton about 10 meters (32 ft.) that floats through the air as if caught in the wind until it drops down on a human victim and suffocates them by wrapping around their face.

I had already drawn this yokai in a Gegege no Kitaro fanart and was eager to draw him again.

Colored and graphite pencil. (I forget what paper I used.)

Enen-ra A puff of smoke capable of shape shifting.

Graphite pencil, colored pencil and Crayola marker on textured paper.

Kara-Kasa (parasol) One of a larger category of yokai known as tsukumogami. It is a paper parasol that has gained a soul after 100 years.

I originally had a more dynamic pose in mind but after a few thumbnails I decided to just let its weirdness speak for itself. I also wanted to use his other name Kasa-Bake (umbrella ghost) because I think it makes more sense but I wrote an R instead of an S so….

Copic maker on bristol paper.

Hitodama (Human soul) Apparitions of departed souls in the form of floating balls of fire. They’re said to appear wherever ghosts are present and seeing them is a bad omen. In anime, cartoonish versions of hitodama appear around characters as a humorous way of conveying dread or despair.

Gouache on watercolor paper.

Hitotsume Kozo (one-eyed boy) One- eyed boy often depicted dressed as a young monk in training. They are notorious pranksters and like to hide in the shadows and jump out at unsuspecting people. He's one of the most popular yokai in Japan.

Colored pencil with a graphite pencil background.

Well, mine's on the horror game: Ao Oni. Years after being scarred by being chased by devils, losing his friends to them, and suffering the consequences of being accused of murdering them, the protagonist: Hiroshi, is granted the ability to see yokai by an obake spirit.

This will provide reference to which ones he will see.

Lastly, yes, I could use a few links.

Golly I love Kasa-obake ;_; The weirdest little yokai ever but has won me over for so many years.
Also Ittan-momen~ I just want to wrap it around me-- without it strangling me.

What cartoon are you referring to? Yokai come from Japanese folklore so they pop up in all sorts of Japanese games and cartoons. Perhaps you mean Gegege no Kitaro?

Thanks for the link! So are you into ACEOs?

I can't believe you haven't gotten a single comment on these yet! They're amazing! They'd be so awesome as ACEOS ^^ (I'm kinda envious because they sell precut cards where you live. Cutting is always my least favorite part of making ACEOS ^^")

Your Jinmenken looks so cute XD Even with the face of an old man, hahah.

To be perfectly honest I had to look it up myself because despite knowing WHAT they are and using the expression all the time, I tend to forget what it actually stands for ^^" It's Art Cards, Editions and Originals.

Hm. I knew that people were trading these things at swap meets and stuff but what does "Editions and Originals" mean? Do artists make variant editions and limited editions like real trading cards do?

And what does the S stand for?

Please tell me, because I was thinking about selling these on DA and at conventions!

The 's' is just used for the plural. Everything else that you might have questions about will most probably be answered on the official website: [link]
